The attack on Egypt (Jer 46:22-46:24)

“‘She makes a sound

Like a snake gliding away.

Her enemies march in force.

They come against her

With axes,

Like those who fell trees.

They shall cut down

Her forest.’

Says Yahweh.

‘Even though it is

Impenetrable,

Because they are

More numerous

Than locusts.

They are without number.

Daughter Egypt

Shall be put to shame.

She shall be handed over

To a people from the north.’”

The Egyptians will slitter away like a snake as her enemies shall attack her in full force. They are coming with axes to kill her, as if they were clearing a forest. This enemy is like a large swarm of locusts that is so numerous that cannot be measured. Good daughter Egypt will be put to shame, as she will be handed over to the people from the north.

Lebanon (Isa 29:17-29:18)

“Shall not Lebanon,

In a little while,

Become a fruitful field?

The fruitful field

Shall be regarded as a forest.

On that day,

The deaf shall hear

The words of a scroll.

Out of their gloom,

Out of their darkness,

The eyes of the blind shall see.”

This seems to be added here, but it is about Lebanon. In a little while, Lebanon will be a fruitful field as a forest because of its cedar trees. When that happens, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll and the blind will see with their eyes, despite their gloom and darkness. Good things lie ahead for Lebanon.

The alliances (Isa 7:2-7:2)

“When the house of David heard

That Aram had allied itself

With Ephraim,

The heart of King Ahaz shook.

The heart of his people shook,

As the trees of the forest

Shake before the wind.”

King Ahaz had barely become king of Judah when this news that the King of Aram and Syria had joined with the King of Israel at Ephraim to come against him. Both he and his people of Judah were afraid. They were like shaking trees in a forest all shook up by the wind.
