Their dead bodies will lie in the street (Rev 11:8)

“Their bodies

Will be on the street

Of the great city,

That is symbolically called

And Egypt,

Where also

Their Lord

Was crucified.”

John said, “Their bodies (καὶ τὸ πτῶμα αὐτῶν) will be in the street (ἐπὶ τῆς πλατείας) of the great city (τῆς πόλεως τῆς μεγάλης) that is symbolically called (ἥτις καλεῖται πνευματικῶς) Sodom (Σόδομα) and Egypt (καὶ Αἴγυπτος), where also their Lord (ὅπου καὶ ὁ Κύριος αὐτῶν) was crucified (ἐσταυρώθη).”  After the death of these two witnesses, John heard someone say that their bodies would lie in the street of the great city.  There are a number of problems figuring out what is this great city.  It could be Rome, Babylon, or Jerusalem, since that city was where the Lord Jesus was crucified.  Instead, this voice said that it was symbolically Sodom or Egypt.  Of course, Sodom was the primary example of an evil city in Genesis, chapter 19.  Ezekiel, chapter 16:46-56, referred to Jerusalem as being as evil as Sodom.  Egypt was the evil place of slavery in Exodus, and throughout Israelite history.  What is a great city for you?
