Test first! (1 Tim. 3:10)

“Let the deacons first

Be tested!

Then if they show themselves

Blameless,

Let them serve

As deacons.”

καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.

Paul said, “Let the deacons (καὶ οὗτοι δὲ) first (πρῶτον) be tested (δοκιμαζέσθωσαν)!  Then if they show themselves blameless (ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες), let them serve as deacons (εἶτα διακονείτωσαν).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word ἀνέγκλητοι that means not to be called to account, irreproachable, or blameless.  Paul said that the deacons should be tested first.  If they showed up as blameless, then they could serve as deacons.  It is not clear what kind of test this was.  Of course, if they turned out okay then they could be deacons.  Should there be some kind of test before people can become Christian leaders?
