The taking of Hormah

In Numbers, chapter 21:1-3, there was a follow up to the battle of Hormah, that first appeared in Numbers, chapter 14:39-45, where the Israelites were defeated.  Hormah appeared 9 times in the Hebrew Bible.  This story involved the Canaanite King of Arad who was living in the Negeb area.  He heard that the Israelites were coming to Atharim, a name that only appears once here, so that he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.  However, there was a major change from the first battle.  This time, Israel made a vow to Yahweh.  Then Yahweh listened to the voice of Israel, and handed over these Canaanites.  The Israelites utterly destroyed them and their towns so the place was called Hormah.  This was different from chapter 14, where the Israelites lost, because Yahweh was not with them in the Ark of the Covenant.  However, it may have been a different battle since the Amalekites were with the Canaanites in chapter 14.  Anyway, the Israelites won this first battle towards the Promised Land because Yahweh was with them.  Is God with you when you go to battle?
