Jesus loved his followers (Jn 13:1-13:1)

“Now before the festival

Of the Passover,

Jesus knew

That his hour

Had come

For him

To depart

From this world.

He was going

To the Father.

He loved his own

Who were in the world.

He loved them

To the end.”

Then John uniquely indicated that the festival of the Passover was coming (Πρὸ δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς τοῦ πάσχα).  Jesus (ὁ Ἰησοῦς) knew (εἰδὼς) that his hour had come (ὅτι ἦλθεν αὐτοῦ ἡ ὥρα) to depart (ἵνα μεταβῇ) from this world (ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου) to go to the Father (πρὸς τὸν Πατέρα).  He loved (ἀγαπήσας) his own disciples (τοὺς ἰδίους), who were in the world (τοὺς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ).  He loved them to the end (εἰς τέλος ἠγάπησεν αὐτούς).  The Jewish Passover festival played an important part in this so-called passion narrative.  This Passover feast celebrated the angel of death passing over the Jewish people in Egypt that led eventually to their escape or exodus from Egypt.  Jesus realized that his hour had come for the new exodus from sin, selfishness, and Satan to happen.  This much anticipated hour of Jesus had finally arrived.  Jesus was going to depart from his beloved disciples because he was returning to the Father.  However, he loved his earthly disciples right up to the end of his earthly life.  Do you expect to love your friends until the end of your life?
