Jonathan and Ahimaaz are David’s informants (2 Sam 17:17-17:22)

Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at En-rogel. A servant girl used to go and tell them the news. Then they would go and tell King David. They could not risk being seen entering the city. But a boy saw them. He told Absalom. Thus both of them went away quickly. They came to the house of a man at Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard. They went down into it. The man’s wife took a covering, stretched it over the well’s mouth, and spread out grain on it. Nothing was known of it.”

The two sons of the high priests, Jonathan and Ahimaaz, were the liaison messengers between Hushai and David. They were seen by a boy who reported them to Absalom. They then hid in a well in Bahurim, the town where Shimei, the cursing shouting guy, was from. The well was covered over with grain on a cloth so that no one would spot them.

“When Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said. ‘Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?’ The woman said to them. ‘They have crossed over the brook of water.’ When they searched and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. After they had gone, the men came up out of the well. They went and told King David. They said to David. ‘Go and cross the water quickly. For thus and so has Ahithophel counseled against you.’ So David and all the people who were with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.”

Absalom sent his men to find Ahimaaz and Jonathan. When they got to the house with the well, the woman said that they had gone over the creek. Absalom’s men searched and could not find them. So they went back to Jerusalem. When the coast was clear, they got out of the well. Then they went to King David to tell him to cross over to the other side of the Jordan because of Ahithophel’s plan to kill him. That night they were able to all get across the Jordan, so that by daybreak no one was left on the west side of the Jordan.
