Luke indicated that Jesus said to his disciples (εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ) that they should let these words sink into their ears (Θέσθε ὑμεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν τοὺς λόγους τούτους). The Son of Man (ὁ γὰρ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου) was about to be betrayed (μέλλει παραδίδοσθαι) into human hands (εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων). Luke had Jesus insist that they listen to what he had to say to them. This saying about the fate of the Son of Man can also be found in Matthew, chapter 17:22, and Mark, chapter 9:31, but they both mentioned the death and resurrection of Jesus that was not mentioned here. Mark said that Jesus was teaching his disciples. Thus, he told them that the Son of Man was about to be betrayed into human hands, without mentioning any particular group. They were going to put him to death. However, after being killed, three days later he would rise again. Matthew said that Jesus and his disciples were gathering together in Galilee, probably getting ready to go to Jerusalem. Jesus told them that the Son of Man was about to be betrayed by human hands, without mentioning any particular group as he had done earlier. They were going to kill him. However, on the third day, he would be raised up. There was no mention of the death and resurrection of Jesus here in Luke, just his human betrayal. Have you ever betrayed anyone?

ὑμῶν δὲ μακάριοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ὅτι βλέπουσιν, καὶ τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν ὅτι ἀκούουσιν.
ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοὶ προφῆται καὶ δίκαιοι ἐπεθύμησαν ἰδεῖν ἃ βλέπετε καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν, καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν.
This saying about the blessed ones can also be found almost word for word in Luke, chapter 10:23-24, indicating a Q source. Jesus’ disciples have heard and seen what other prophets and righteous ones had wanted to see and hear, but never did. His disciples were the blessed or happy ones (ὑμῶν δὲ μακάριοι). Blessed are their eyes because they see (οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ὅτι βλέπουσιν)! Blessed are their ears because they hear (καὶ τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν ὅτι ἀκούουσιν)! Jesus issued a solemn declaration (ἀμὴν γὰρ λέγω ὑμῖν). Many prophets and righteous people had set their hearts on or longed for (ὅτι πολλοὶ προφῆται καὶ δίκαιοι ἐπεθύμησαν) what they had seen (ἰδεῖν ἃ βλέπετε) and heard (καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ ἀκούετε), but they never saw them (καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν) or heard them (καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν) like they have. The disciples of Jesus should realize how fortunate they are to be with Jesus. Many people were less fortunate than them.
“The mind of the intelligent appreciates proverbs.
An attentive ear is the desire of the wise.
Just as water extinguishes a blazing fire,
So almsgiving atones for sins.
Whoever repays favors
Gives thought to the future.
When they fall,
They will find support.”
Intelligent people appreciate proverbs. You should be wise. You should pay attention with your ears. Like water on a fire, almsgiving, can atone for sins. If you repay people for favors, your reward will go into the future. If anything happens to you, you will find support.
“Apply your mind to instruction.
Apply your ear to the words of knowledge.”
This is simple enough. Be a good student! Pay attention! Put your mind on what your instructor says. Listen carefully with your ears to the words of knowledge that others are telling you.

Incline your ear!
Hear my words!
Apply your mind to my teaching.
It will be pleasant,
If you keep them within you.
It will be pleasant,
If all of them are ready on your lips.
Your trust may be in Yahweh.
I have made them known to you today,
Now we suddenly switch backs to the words of the wise, rather than the Proverbs of Solomon. Who then is this wise one or wise ones? Some have speculated that these were the wise friends of Solomon. However, the style is reminiscent of the first few chapters in the prologue. The request is that you incline your ears and hear his words. The use of the singular might mean one individual. Quite frankly, we have to say that we do not know who this wise man is. However, you are asked to apply your mind to his teaching. This will go well, that is pleasant, if you keep his words within you, ready on your lips. Basically you must trust Yahweh. The wise man has made it known to you, explicitly you, today. So listen up!
