You do not understand! (Jn 8:43-8:43)

“Why do you not understand

What I say?

Is it because

You cannot accept

My word?”

διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε; ὅτι οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν.

John uniquely indicated that Jesus asked why they did not understand (οὐ γινώσκετε) what he was saying (διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν).  Was it because they could not accept or were not able to hear (ὅτι οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν) his word (λόγον τὸν ἐμόν)?  This idea of a lack of understanding was a constant theme in the Gospel of John, indicating a gnostic tone with the emphasis on knowledge.  True hearing or listening was considered to be part of understanding.  However, Jesus had an explanation for their misunderstanding.  Why were they not able to hear or accept the Word of Jesus, the Word of God?  Was their misunderstanding deliberate or merely their lack of capacity?  Why do you not understand the word of God?
