“Pilate entered
The praetorium again.
He asked Jesus.
‘Where are you from?’
But Jesus gave him
No answer.”
John uniquely indicated that Pilate entered (καὶ εἰσῆλθεν) the praetorium again (εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν). This time, he asked Jesus (καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ) where he was from (Πόθεν εἶ σύ)? But Jesus (ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς) did not give him any answer (ἀπόκρισιν οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ). Pilate went back in to speak to Jesus as he wanted to know where he came from. However, Jesus did not respond to him, after having just finished a dialogue with him about the meaning of king and kingdom in chapter 18:33-37. Nevertheless, Jesus did not respond to Pilate about his origins. Do you know where you are from?
