We know you have a demon (Jn 8:52-8:52)

“These Jewish leaders

Said to Jesus.

‘Now we know

That you have a demon.

Abraham died.

So did the prophets.

Yet you say.

‘Whoever keeps

My word,

Will never

Taste death.’”

John uniquely indicated that these Jewish Jerusalem leaders (οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι) said to Jesus (οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι) that now we know (Νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν) that you have a demon (ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις).  Abraham died (Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανεν).  So did the prophets (καὶ οἱ προφῆται).  Yet you say (καὶ σὺ λέγεις) that whoever keeps your word (Ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ), they will never taste eternal death (οὐ μὴ γεύσηται θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα).  These Jewish leaders used Jesus’ own words to indicate that Jesus was possessed with a devil because he had said that anyone who kept his word would not die.  Obviously, these Jewish leaders took Jesus literally.  They explained that even Abraham and the various holy prophets had died.  Once again, there was confusion and misunderstanding between Jesus and his opponents.  This is pretty normal in most circumstances.  People try to put the worst spin on what anyone says when they are dealing with someone that they do not like.  Do you accuse people you disagree with of being demonic?
