The world hates you (1 John 3:13)

“Brothers!

Do not be astonished

That the world

Hates you.”

Μὴ θαυμάζετε, ἀδελφοί, εἰ μισεῖ ὑμᾶς ὁ κόσμος.

This author said, “Brothers (ἀδελφοί)!  Do not be astonished (Μὴ θαυμάζετε) that the world (ὁ κόσμος) hates you (εἰ μισεῖ ὑμᾶς).”  This author warned his readers, his fellow Christian brothers, that they should not be surprised or astonished that world hates them.  Once again, the world is not seen in a good light but full of people who hated them.  Do worldly people hate you?

The world hates you (Jn 15:19-15:19)

“If you belonged

To the world,

The world

Would love you

As its own.

Because you do not

Belong

To the world,

Therefore,

The world

Hates you.

Because I have chosen you

Out of the world.”

John uniquely indicated that Jesus said that if they belonged to the world (εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου ἦτε), the world (ὁ κόσμος) would love (ἐφίλει) them as its own (ἂν τὸ ἴδιον).  Because they do not belong to the world (ὅτι δὲ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ ἐστέ), therefore (διὰ τοῦτο) the world (ὁ κόσμος) hates them (μισεῖ ὑμᾶς) because Jesus has chosen them (ἐγὼ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς) out of the world (ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου).  Just as the world hated Jesus, they would also hate his disciples.  If they were part of the world of non-believing Jews and gentiles, this world would love them.  However, because they are not part of this world, this world hates them precisely because Jesus had chosen them out of this world to be his followers.  Do you feel hated by anybody?
