The steadfast love of Yahweh (Ps 138:7-138:8)

“Even though I walk

In the midst of trouble,

You preserve me

Against the wrath of my enemies.

You stretch out your hand.

Your right hand delivers me.

Yahweh will fulfill his purpose for me.

Yahweh!

Your steadfast love endures forever!

Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

This short psalm ends with a beautiful expression of faith. David believed that even though he walked in the middle of trouble, Yahweh would protect him from his enemies. Yahweh would stretch out his right hand to deliver and save him. Yahweh would fulfill his promises with David because his steadfast love endures forever. David believed that Yahweh would not forsake the work of his hands.

The steadfast love of Yahweh (Ps 89:1-89:2)

A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite

“I will sing of your steadfast love forever!

Yahweh!

With my mouth,

I will proclaim your faithfulness

To all generations.

I declare that

Your steadfast love was established forever.

Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.”

Psalm 89 is a long psalm proclaiming the faithfulness of God. This psalm is not from David, but rather from Ethan the Ezrahite. Ethan was one of the 4 wise sons of Mahol mentioned in 1 Kings, chapter 4, who was not quite as wise as Solomon. This long psalm begins with the psalmist singing about the steadfast love of Yahweh. This wise psalmist will proclaim the faithfulness of Yahweh for all generations to hear. Yahweh’s love lasts forever. His everlasting faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.

The steadfast love of Yahweh (Ps 36:5-36:7)

“Your steadfast love!

Yahweh!

Extends to the heavens!

Your faithfulness extends to the clouds!

Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains!

Your judgments are like the great deep!

You save humans and animals alike!

Yahweh!

How precious is your steadfast love!

O God!”

Here is a beautiful expression of the steadfast love of Yahweh that extends to the heavens and the clouds. His righteousness is like the highest mountain, while his judgments are like the deepest part of the sea. Yahweh saves humans and animals because of his steadfast love. Yahweh is the great God. The idea of the precious steadfast love of God is a common theme of these psalms.
