“Elisha was sitting in his house. The elders were sitting with him. Before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to the elders. ‘Are you aware that this murderer has sent someone to take off my head? When the messenger comes, see that you shut the door and hold it closed against him. Is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?’ While he was still speaking with them, the king came down to him and said. ‘This trouble is from Yahweh! Why should I hope in Yahweh any longer?’ But Elisha said. ‘Hear the word of Yahweh. Thus says Yahweh. Tomorrow about this time a measure of choice meal shall be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’ Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God. ‘Even if Yahweh would make windows in the sky, could such a thing happen?’ But Elisha said. ‘You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.’”
Elisha was sitting with the elders in his house. He warned them that the king had sent someone to cut off his head. He told them to lock the door and hold it closed so that he could not enter. The king will be right behind him. Sure enough, the king showed up and said that all the trouble in Samaria was coming from Yahweh. Elisha was doing nothing about it. The king said that there was no reason to hope in Yahweh. Then Elisha predicted that the next day the price of meal and barley would return to normal, about a shekel a piece or about $5.00 USA. The captain of the king was skeptical of this. Elisha told him that he would see it but not eat of it. Once again, the prophet Elisha got out of a difficult position.
