The law and faith (chapter 3)

Paul said that we were under the law before faith came.  The disciplinary law was our custodian until Jesus Christ came to justify us by faith.  We are no longer under a custodian or a disciplinarian.  We are all children or sons of God through faith.  We were baptized in Christ and put on Christ.

The law and faith (Gal. 3:23)

“Now before faith came,

We were confined

Under the law

Until faith

Would be revealed.”

Paul said, “Now before faith came (Πρὸ τοῦ δὲ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν), we were confined (ἐφρουρούμεθα) and locked up (συνκλειόμενοι) under the law (ὑπὸ νόμον) until faith would be (εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν πίστιν) revealed (ἀποκαλυφθῆναι).”  Paul explained that before faith in Jesus Christ came, all of us were confined or imprisoned under the Mosaic law.  All the Judaic laws of the Torah kept the Israelites in temporary or protective imprisoned custody.  They were not to imitate the devious ways of the gentiles.  Thus, the law preceded faith.  However, faith was revealed in Jesus Christ.  Do you see laws as confining you?

The law and faith (Gal. 3:12)

“But the law

Does not rest

On faith.

‘Whoever does

The works of the law

Will live by them.’”

ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως, ἀλλ’ Ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς.

Paul said that the law (ὁ δὲ νόμος) does not rest on faith (οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως).  “Whoever does the works of the law (ἀλλ’ Ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ) will live by them (ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς).”  Paul next turned to a citation from Leviticus, chapter 18:4-5, another book of the Torah, to show that the law or Torah was not tied to faith. “I am Yahweh your God.  You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances.  By doing so, one shall live.  I am Yahweh.”  There seems to new rules, as Yahweh spoke to Moses.  Clearly, Yahweh was their God.  They were not to do things like the Egyptians or the Canaanites, where they came from and where they are going.  They are to follow these new statutes and ordinances that Moses received.  There was nothing about faith.  This was about their life style and identity that would be different than the other countries and people around them.  Paul showed the difference between faith in Jesus Christ and laws about a lifestyle based on God, Yahweh.  If your religion about lifestyle or faith?
