The last breath (Lk 23:46-23:46)

“Then Jesus,

Crying

With a loud voice,

Said.

‘Father!

Into your hands

I commend my spirit!’

Having said this,

He breathed his last.”

Luke indicated that Jesus cried out with a loud voice (καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ).  He said to his Father (εἶπεν Πάτερ) that he was giving over (παρατίθεμαι) his spirit (τὸ πνεῦμά μου) into his hands (εἰς χεῖράς σου).  Jesus seemed to cite Psalm 31:5, where David had committed his heart to the hand of Yahweh.  Now Jesus was committing his spirit into the hands of his Father.  After he said this (τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν), he breathed his last breath (ἐξέπνευσεν).  This was similar to the other canonical gospel writers.  In John, chapter 19:30, Jesus said that it was finished, after drinking the sour wine.  Mark, chapter 15:37, had the simple comment that Jesus cried out with a loud voice again (ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην).  Then Jesus breathed his last breath (ἐξέπνευσεν).  Matthew, chapter 27:50, also had the comment that Jesus cried out with a loud voice (ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς πάλιν κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ).  Then gave up his spirit (ἀφῆκεν τὸ πνεῦμα).  Jesus had died on the cross.  Have you ever been with a dying person?

The last breath (Mk 15:37-15:37)

“Then Jesus

Gave a loud cry.

He breathed his last.”

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν.

This is almost word for word in Matthew, chapter 27:50.  In Luke, chapter 23:46, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying that he was commending his spirit into the hands of his Father.  In John, chapter 19:30, Jesus said that it was finished, after drinking the sour wine.  Mark has the simple comment that Jesus cried out with a loud voice again (ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην).  Then Jesus breathed his last breath (ἐξέπνευσεν0.  Jesus had died on the cross.
