Israel shall return to life (Hos 14:4-14:6)

“I will heal

Their disloyalty.

I will love them

Freely.

My anger

Has turned

From them.

I will be

Like the dew

To Israel.

He shall blossom

Like the lily.

He shall strike root

Like the forests of Lebanon.

His shoots

Shall spread out.

His beauty shall be

Like the olive tree.

His fragrance shall be

Like Lebanon.”

Yahweh, via Hosea, said that he was going to heal the disloyalty of Israel. He would love them freely, since his anger had turned from them. He was going to be like the morning dew to Israel. He was going to make them blossom again like the lilies. He was going to have them set down strong roots, like the forests of the Lebanon cedar trees. Their shoots would spread out all over the place. Their beauty would be like that of an olive tree. Their fragrance would be like the Lebanon cedar trees.

Chant of joy (Isa 44:23-44:23)

“Sing!

O heavens!

Yahweh has done it.

Shout!

O depths of the earth!

Break forth into singing!

O mountains!

O forest!

Every tree in it!

Yahweh has redeemed Jacob.

He will be glorified in Israel!”

Second Isaiah has this chant of joy. The heavens were to sing about what Yahweh has done. The depths of the earth should shout. The mountains and the forests, with all its trees, should break into singing. Yahweh has redeemed Jacob so that he should be glorified in Israel.

Future problems for the king of Assyria (Isa 10:16-10:19)

“Therefore the Sovereign,

Yahweh of hosts,

Will send

A wasting sickness

Among his stout warriors.

Under his glory

A burning will be kindled,

Like the burning of a fire.

The light of Israel

Will become a fire.

His Holy One

Will be a flame.

It will burn his thorns.

It will devour his briers in one day.

Yahweh will destroy

The glory of his forest.

Yahweh will destroy

The glory of his fruitful land,

Both soul and body.

It will be as

When an invalid wastes away.

The remnant of the trees

Of his forest

Will be so few

That a child

Can write them down.”

Isaiah predicts the devastation of the army and land of the king of Assyria. Yahweh was going to send a wasting sickness among his warriors. This maybe an allusion to 2 Kings, chapter 19, when 185,000 Assyrian troops died. The light of Israel will become a raging flame starting a great fire that will destroy and devour the thorns and briers of Assyria itself. Yahweh will destroy the forests and the fruitful land with a wild fire, so that both their bodies and souls will be destroyed. There will be so few trees left, so that a mere child can count and write the number down.

The response to the voice of Yahweh (Ps 29:9-29:9)

“The voice of Yahweh causes the oaks to whirl.

The voice of Yahweh strips the forests bare.

In his temple,

All say.

‘Glory!’”

The thunderous voice of Yahweh with its wind caused the strong oaks to whirl. In fact, this storm thunder voice stripped the forests bare. The response to all this was to go to the Temple and praise Yahweh by saying “Glory to Yahweh,” This idea of praying to God in a church or temple was, and still is, a common response when a fierce storm occurs.
