The division among the Pharisees (Jn 9:16-9:16)

“Some of the Pharisees said.

‘This man

Is not from God.

He does not observe

The Sabbath.’

But others said.

‘How can a man

Who is a sinner

Do such signs?’

There was a division

Among them.”

John uniquely said that some of the Pharisees (οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές) said (ἔλεγον) that this man (ὁ ἄνθρωπος), Jesus, was not from God (Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ), because (ὅτι) he did not observe (οὐ τηρεῖ) the Sabbath (τὸ σάββατον).  However, other Pharisees (ἄλλοι) asked (ἔλεγον) how could a man (Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος) be a sinner (ἄνθρωπος) who does such signs (τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν)?  Clearly the Pharisees were divided since there was a division or schism among them (καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς).  Now, even the Pharisees could agree about Jesus.  They were chastising him for not observing the Sabbath rest, but meanwhile they wondered how he had done these miraculous signs if he was not from God.  Jesus was a sign of contradiction and division to these Pharisees.  Are you confused or divided within yourself about Jesus?
