The children of the promise (Gal. 4:28)

“Now you!

My brothers!

You are the children

Of the promise,

Like Isaac.”

ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, κατὰ Ἰσαὰκ ἐπαγγελίας τέκνα ἐστέ.

Paul said, “Now you (ὑμεῖς δέ)!  My brothers (ἀδελφοί)!  You are the children of the promise (ἐπαγγελίας τέκνα ἐστέ), like Isaac (κατὰ Ἰσαὰκ).”  Paul made it very clear so that no one would misunderstand him.  He said that the new Christians in Galatia were his brothers and the children of the promise.  They were like Isaac, the son of Sarah, and not like Ishmael, the son of Hagar.  Those who followed Christ were the true descendants of Abraham, since they shared in the blessings given to his son Isaac.  Do you feel a connection to Isaac?

The children of the promise (Rom 9:8)

“This means

That it is not the children

Of the flesh

Who are the children of God,

But the children

Of the promise

Are counted

As descendants.”

Paul said that this means that it is (τοῦτ’ ἔστιν) not the children of the flesh (οὐ τὰ τέκνα τῆς σαρκὸς) who are the children of God (ταῦτα τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ), but the children (ἀλλὰ τὰ τέκνα) of the promise (τῆς ἐπαγγελίας) are counted (λογίζεται) as his descendants or from his seed (εἰς σπέρμα).  Paul was clear.  The children of the fleshy human nature are not the children of God.  Ethnic descent was not the main element in deciding who were the children of God.  Rather the children of the promise are the real descendants of Abraham.  In other words, following the promise of Jesus made you a true descendant of Abraham, not your ethnic background or human ethnicity.  By listening to the promises of Jesus, you were a true Jew, descending from Abraham.  Do you consider yourself a descendant of Abraham?
