Thank you – 52

After more than seven months, I have finally finished the Acts of the Apostles.  I have now finished the four canonical gospels, and this book about the acts of the apostles, particularly Peter and Paul.  Every time I finish a book of the Bible, I send a thank you blog.  I usually post five blogs a day covering a verse of the biblical books.  So far, I have posted over 12,210 blogs about the individual paragraphs of all the 46 books of the Old Testament, plus the individual verses of the first five books of the New Testament.  It has taken me almost seven years to get this done, since I first began in 2013.

Over 1,000 people have emailed me that they are following this project in some form or another.  225 people follow this blog every day.  Many people have visited this site.  The highest recent month was September, 2019 when 2,056 people visited this site.  There have been over 64,773 hits on this blog since its inception.  I just want to thank all of you.  Word Press sent me a compilation that showed that about 6,800 people from 84 countries visited this web site in 2015.

I realize that 23,029 of you have left comments, but I have not responded to them.  Some of you might want to moderate my comments, which is fine with me.  If you want to contact me directly, my email is efinne1540@gmail.com.  Here is a list of those who have sent email comments during the past six months.  Some of you sent me more than one email about how you liked this website.  Thank you to everyone.

The Pharisee prayer (Lk 18:11-18:11)

“The Pharisee,

Standing by himself,

Was praying thus.

‘God!

I thank you

That I am not

Like other people.

I am not

A thief,

A wicked person,

An adulterer,

Or even

Like this tax collector.’”

Luke has Jesus tell a parable about this Pharisee and a tax collector that is only found in this gospel.  Luke indicated that Jesus said this Pharisee stood by himself (ὁ Φαρισαῖος σταθεὶς ταῦτα πρὸς ἑαυτὸν).  He was praying (προσηύχετο) to God.  He said thank you to God (Ὁ Θεός, εὐχαριστῶ σοι) that he was not like other people (ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ ὥσπερ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων).  He was not a thief, a robber, or a swindler (ἅρπαγες), unjust, unrighteous, or wicked (ἄδικοι), or an adulterer (μοιχοί), or even like this tax collector (ἢ καὶ ὡς οὗτος ὁ τελώνης).  This Pharisee considered himself a just, righteous person, not like other sinners who were evil.  Certainly, he was happy not to be a terrible Roman tax collector, like that other person in the Temple.  Thus, he uttered the prayer of an upstanding righteous Jewish person.  Do you thank God that you are better than other people?

Thank you (Lk 17:9-17:9)

“Do you thank

The slave

For doing

What he was

Commanded to do?”

μὴ ἔχει χάριν τῷ δούλῳ ὅτι ἐποίησεν τὰ διαταχθέντα;

Luke uniquely indicated that Jesus asked if they thanked (μὴ ἔχει χάριν) the slave (τῷ δούλῳ) for doing what he was commanded to do (ὅτι ἐποίησεν τὰ διαταχθέντα)?  After all, the slave was only doing his duty, his job.  Should you thank someone for doing what you asked them to do?

The hidden things from the wise ones (Mt 11:25-11:25)

“At that time,

Jesus said.

‘I thank you!

Father!

Lord of heaven

And earth!

You have hidden

These things

From the wise ones

And the intelligent ones.

You have revealed them

To unlearned little ones.”

Then Matthew has Jesus say that the unlearned little one had received revelation, but the wise and intelligent ones did not understand them.  Luke, chapter 10:21, has a similar statement, indicating a possible common Q source.  Mathew used the transition phrase “At that time” (Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ).  Jesus was answering people (ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν).  He said thank you to his Father, the Lord of heaven and earth (εἶπεν Ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι, Πάτερ, Κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς).  He had hidden these things from the wise and intelligent ones (ὅτι ἔκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν).  However, he revealed them to the unlearned little ones (καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις).  Somehow, the unwise ones were the ones who got God’s revelation, while the wise and intelligent ones did not understand them, because God had hidden it from them.
