The fate of all is the same (Ps 49:10-49:13)

“When we look at the wise,

They die.

The fool and the stupid perish together.

They leave their wealth to others.

Their graves are their homes forever.

Their dwelling places are for all generations,

Even though they named lands as their own.

Mortals cannot abide in their pomp.

They are like the animals that perish.

This is the fate

Of the foolhardy.

This is the end

Of those who are pleased with their lot.”

Selah

This psalmist reminds us to the look at the wise people, much like himself. They die. However, so do the fools and stupid people also die. Their wealth is given to others. Their house is no longer opulent since their home is the dwelling place of all people for generations to come, the grave. Mortals cannot keep their pomp forever, since they are like animals that die. This is the fate of all, to die. Even those who are foolhardy and pleased with their lot in life, they will come to an end. On that happy note, it is time for the usual musical interlude pause of Selah.

The evildoers are eating Yahweh’s people (Ps 14:4-14:6)

“Have they no knowledge?

All the evildoers

Eat up my people

As they eat bread.

Why do they not call upon Yahweh?

There they shall be in great terror.

God is with the company of the righteous.

You would confound the plans of the poor.

However, Yahweh is their refuge.”

The evildoers are stupid. They have no knowledge. They eat up Yahweh’s people. This metaphor seems to indicate what the evil doers were trying to do to Yahweh’s people. Why are they not calling on Yahweh? There will be a great terror to come for these evildoers. This is part of the biblical apocalyptic concept of a violent ending to the evil ones. God would always be with the righteous. The poor would find refuge in Yahweh.

Yahweh questions Job about ostriches (Job 39:13-39:18)

“The ostrich’s wings flap proudly.

Its pinions lack plumage.

It leaves its eggs to the earth.

It lets them be warmed on the ground.

It forgets that a foot may crush them.

A wild animal may trample them.

It deals cruelly with its young.

It treats them as if they were not its own.

Even though its labor be in vain,

It has no fear.

Because God has made it forget wisdom.

God has given it no share in understanding.

When it spreads its plumes aloft,

It laughs at the horse and its rider.”

Somehow Yahweh wanted Job to know about ostriches. Its wings do not have feathers. It seems to be stupid since it leaves its eggs on the ground for anyone to trample on them. It is kind of cruel to its young. Ostriches seem to lack wisdom and understanding. However, it still laughs at horses and riders. It seems strange that Yahweh should be so interested in ostriches.

Bildad responded to Job (Job 18:1-18:4)

“Then Bildad the Shuhite answered.

‘How long will you hunt for words?

Consider!

Then we shall speak.

Why are we counted as cattle?

Why are we stupid in your sight?

You who tear yourself in your anger,

Shall the earth be forsaken because of you?

Shall the rock be removed out of its place?’”

Bildad responded with his second speech that Job is acting like he was the center of the world. Why was Job trying to hunt for words? Bildad and his friends wanted to speak. Why were they called cattle or stupid? Job was angry at himself. Then he was mad at everyone else. He was making too much of himself. Was the world going to stop? Would rocks jump up to move on? No, Job was being too ego-centric.

Mystery of God (Job 11:7-11:12)

“Can you find out about the deep mystery of God?

Can you penetrate the perfection of the Almighty Shaddai?

It is higher than the heavens?

What can you know?

Is it deeper than Sheol!

What can you know?

It is longer than the earth.

It is broader than the sea.

If he passes through,

If he imprisons

If he calls to judgment,

Who can hinder him?

He knows those who are worthless.

When he sees iniquity,

Will he not pay attention?

But a stupid person will have understanding,

When a wild ass is born human.”

This is like a little poem to the mysteries or deep things of God. God is limitless. It is interesting that Zophar shows his understanding of the flat earth by saying that that almighty Shaddai was higher than the highest heaven, deeper than the Sheol, the place of death underground, longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. If God were to pass judgment, who would stop him? He knows who is worthless and evil. A stupid person would have understanding when a wild donkey would be born to a human, in other words never. Zophar seemed to imply that Job was stupid and not wise.
