Jesus was sorrowful (Mk 14:34-14:34)

“Jesus said to them.

‘I am deeply grieved,

Even to death.

Remain here!

Keep awake!’”

καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου· μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε

This is almost exactly word for word in Matthew, chapter 26:38.  Mark indicated that Jesus said to his 3 favorite apostles (καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς) that he was very sorrowful or deeply grieved (Περίλυπός ἐστιν ἡ ψυχή μου), even unto death (ἕως θανάτου).  He wanted them to stay there (μείνατε ὧδε) to watch, and remain awake or vigilant (καὶ γρηγορεῖτε).  Thus, began the so-called agony of Jesus in the garden.

Stay where you go (Mk 6:10-6:10)

“Jesus said

To them.

‘Wherever you enter

A house,

Stay there

Until you leave the place!’”

καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθητε εἰς οἰκίαν, ἐκεῖ μένετε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε ἐκεῖθεν.

Equivalent passages to this can be found in Matthew, chapter 10:11, and Luke, chapter 9:4.  Mark indicated that Jesus (καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς) had a very simple message about where to stay.  Wherever they entered a house (Ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθητε εἰς οἰκίαν), they should stay there in one place until they left (ἐκεῖ μένετε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε ἐκεῖθεν).  They should not switch places.  They were not to go wandering around.  Find a place and stay there.

Yahweh would return to heaven (Hos 5:15-5:15)Yahweh would return to heaven (Hos 5:15-5:15)

“I will return again

To my place,

Until they acknowledge

Their guilt,

Until they seek my face.

In their distress,

They will beg

My favor.”

Yahweh was going to return to his place in heaven. He was going to stay there, until they would recognize and admit their guilt. He would stay there, until they began to seek his face. Finally, when they were in distress, they might beg for his divine favor.

The response of Shemaiah to Jeremiah’s letter (Jer 29:24-29:28)

“Shemaiah of Nehelam

Sent a letter to

All the people

Who are in Jerusalem,

The priest Zephaniah,

The son of Maaseiah,

As well as to all the priests.

Saying.

‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts!

The God of Israel!

Yahweh has made you priest

Instead of the priest Jehoiada.

Thus there may be officers

In the house of Yahweh

To control any madman

Who plays the prophet.

Thus you can put him

In the stocks

With a collar.

Now why have you not rebuked

Jeremiah of Anathoth

Who plays the prophet for you?

He has actually sent to us

In Babylon,

Saying.

‘It will be a long time.

Build houses!

Live in them!

Plant gardens!

Eat what they produce!’”

Apparently this prophet Shemaiah of Nehelam in Babylon was upset at the letter that Jeremiah sent. So he responded with another letter to the priests at Jerusalem, especially Zephaniah, who had the same father as the slain prophet Zedekiah, so that he would have been his brother. He indicated that Zephaniah had replaced Jehoiada as the chief priest. Thus he had the power to control mad men who pretended to be prophets. In particular, he named Jeremiah as this kind of mad man who told them in Babylon to stay there, build houses, live in them, plant gardens, and eat from them. Shemaiah thought that this was a crazy idea.

The other vessels are going to Babylon (Jer 27:21-27:22)

“Thus says Yahweh of hosts,

The God of Israel,

Concerning the vessels

Left in the house

Of Yahweh,

In the house

Of the king of Judah,

As well as in Jerusalem.

‘They shall be carried

To Babylon.

There they shall stay

Until the day

When I give attention to them.

Then I will bring them up.

I will restore them to this place.’

Says Yahweh.”

Now Yahweh seems to indicate that there will be a second captivity when the rest of the sacred vessels will be brought to Babylon. They would stay there until Yahweh wanted to restore or bring them back to Jerusalem. Thus the vessels in Babylon were going to stay there, until Yahweh brought them back. In the meantime, the other sacred vessels from Jerusalem would be brought there also.
