Remain in the same house (Lk 10:7-10:7)

“Remain

In the same house!

Eat

Whatever they provide!

Drink

Whatever they provide!

The laborer

Deserves to be paid.

Do not move about

From house to house!”

Luke indicated that Jesus said to the 70 disciples that they were to remain in the same house (ἐν αὐτῇ δὲ τῇ οἰκίᾳ μένετε).  They should eat (ἔσθοντες) and drink (καὶ πίνοντες) whatever they were provided (τὰ παρ’ αὐτῶν).  Jesus said that the laborer deserved to be paid or was worthy of his wages They were not to move around (μὴ μεταβαίνετε) from house to house (ἐξ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν).  This is similar to what Luke, chapter 9:4 indicated that Jesus said to his 12 apostles.  There Jesus told the apostles that whatever house they entered, they were to stay there and leave from there.  Equivalent passages to this can be found in Matthew, chapter 10:11, and Mark, chapter 6:10.  Mark indicated that Jesus had a very simple message about where to stay.  Wherever they entered a house, they should stay there in one place until they left.  They should not switch places.  Matthew also had Jesus give a very simple message about where to stay when they entered a town or village.  They should try to find a place to stay with someone who was worthy, honorable, or suitable.  They should not switch places.  They should stay in that one place until they left.  They were not to go wandering around.  Find a suitable person and place!  Then stay there!  This message to the 12 apostles and 70 disciples was the same.  Matthew, chapter 10:10 also indicated that these laborers deserved their food, just like Luke here.  Luke even indicated that they should eat and drink whatever they get, and not be picky.  Where do you stay when you travel?

Stay where you go (Lk 9:4-9:4)

“Whatever house

You enter,

Stay there!

Leave from there!”

Luke indicated that Jesus said to his 12 apostles that whatever house they entered (καὶ εἰς ἣν ἂν οἰκίαν εἰσέλθητε), they were to stay there (ἐκεῖ μένετε) and leave from there (καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἐξέρχεσθε). Find a suitable person and place and stay there.  Where do you stay when you travel?

Mary will conceive and bear a son named Jesus (Lk 1:31-1:31)

“Now,

You will conceive

In your womb.

You will bear a son.

You will name him

Jesus.”

Luke has the angel Gabriel reveal his message to Mary.  She was going to conceive in her womb (καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ).  She was going to bring forth and produce a son (καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν).  She was to call him with the name Jesus (καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν).  That seems like a simple message.  Mary would conceive and bear a son named Jesus.  The name Jesus means “Yahweh saves”, quite fitting.  The Hebrew name would have been Joshua.

The good news about a son (Lk 1:13-1:13)

“Your prayer

Has been heard.

Your wife,

Elizabeth,

Will bear you

A son.

You will name him

John.”

Luke then has this good news for Zechariah.  The heart of this message was that he was going to have a son.  This angel said that his prayer, supplication, or entreaty had been heard His wife Elizabeth would bear him son (αὶ ἡ γυνή σου Ἐλεισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι).  He was to name or call him John (καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάνην).  This was a nice simple message, nothing complicated.  God was going to grant this barren old couple a son who should be called John.

When will it happen? (Mk 13:33-13:33)

“Beware!

Keep alert!

You do not know

When the time

Will come.”

This is somewhat similar to the parable ending saying in Matthew, chapter 25:13, about the virgins at the wedding being vigilant.  Mark indicated that Jesus said that they were to be aware (Βλέπετε) and alert all the time (ἀγρυπνεῖτε), because they did not know (οὐκ οἴδατε) when the end time (γὰρ πότε ὁ καιρός ἐστιν) would come.  This was a simple message to be vigilant all the time because your end or the end of the world could happen at any time.

You do not know the day (Mt 25:13-25:13)

“Keep awake therefore!

You know

Neither the day

Nor the hour!”

This parable ending saying is unique to Matthew.  This is the famous remark about the end times.  Jesus said that they were to keep awake, to watch and be vigilant all the time (Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν), because they did not know (ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε) the day (τὴν ἡμέραν) or the hour (τὴν ἡμέραν) when the end would come.  This was a simple message to be vigilant all the time because your end or the end of the world could happen at any time.

The transgressions of the house of Israel (Ezek 33:10-33:10)

“Now You!

Son of man!

Say!

To the house of Israel!

Thus,

You have said!

‘Our transgressions,

Our sins,

Weigh upon us!

We waste away

Because of them.

How then can we live?’”

Yahweh has a convoluted message for Ezekiel, the son of man, for the house of Israel. The Israelites had said that they had committed sins and transgressions against Yahweh. These sins weighed on them, as they are wasting away. They even wondered how they could live. Yet, this is Ezekiel projecting what Yahweh said to him that the Israelites had said. This was a long way to get a simple message that they were sinners.
