“Now when Jesus returned,
They were all
Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑποστρέφειν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν ὁ ὄχλος· ἦσαν γὰρ πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν.
Luke continued to follow Mark. When Jesus returned (Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑποστρέφειν τὸν Ἰησοῦν), the crowd welcomed him (ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν ὁ ὄχλος). They were all waiting for him (ἦσαν γὰρ πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν). There is something similar to this in Mark, chapter 5:21. Mark said that Jesus crossed to the other side of the sea in a boat. There, a great crowd gathered around him near the seashore. Jesus had returned to familiar ground in the Jewish area around the western side of the Sea of Galilee. Do you like to return to familiar territory?
Had crossed again
In the boat
To the other side,
A great crowd
Gathered around him.
He was by the sea.”
There is something similar to this in Luke, chapter 8:40. Mark said that Jesus crossed to the other side of the sea in a boat (Καὶ διαπεράσαντος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ πάλιν εἰς τὸ πέραν). There, a great crowd gathered around him (συνήχθη ὄχλος πολὺς ἐπ’ αὐτόν) near the seashore (καὶ ἦν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν). Jesus had returned to familiar ground in the Jewish area around the western side of the Sea of Galilee.
“You formed my inward parts.
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you!
I am fearfully made.
I am wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works!
I know them very well.
My frame was not hidden from you.
I was being made in secret.
I was intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
All the days that was formed for me,
When none of them as yet existed.
How weighty to me are your thoughts!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I would count them,
They are more than the sand.
I come to the end.
I am still with you.”
In beautiful colorful language, David, the psalmist, describes his life in the womb, and how he came to be. He was knit together in the womb of his mother by Yahweh. Thus pregnancy is time of knitting. He was made in secret as Yahweh intricately wove him in the depths of the womb. Earth was like the womb. He praised Yahweh for the wonderful work he had become, even as an unformed substance in the womb of his mother. Yahweh had this book of life where he kept track of his future days here on earth. The thoughts of Yahweh are so vast and deep that they cannot be counted because they are like the sands of the seashore. Even now, that his life is now ending, he still was with Yahweh. This is a masterful section about the womb as a place where Yahweh was knitting and weaving the human before his birth. What a powerful argument against abortion.
“Then the king of Egypt gathered great forces, like the sand by the seashore, and many ships. He tried to get possession of Alexander’s kingdom by trickery. He wanted to add it to his own kingdom. He set out for Syria with peaceable words. The people of the towns opened their gates to him. They went to meet him, because King Alexander had commanded them to meet him, since he was King Alexander’s father-in-law. However, when King Ptolemy entered the towns he stationed forces as a garrison in each town.”
King Ptolemy VI of Egypt, father-in-law to King Alexander I of Syria, went to visit Syria. He had a great army like the sand by the sea. He wanted to add Syria to his own kingdom, although he seemed to come in peace. His daughter was the wife of King Alexander I. Every town opened their gates to King Ptolemy VI because the Syrian king told them to do that. However, then the Egyptian king would leave a garrison of troops in each town.
