Yahweh will come to judge the earth (Ps 98:7-98:9)

“Let the sea roar!

Let all that fills it roar!

Let the world roar!

Let all those who dwell in it roar!

Let the floods clap their hands

At the presence of Yahweh!

Let the hills sing together for joy

At the presence of Yahweh!

He is coming

To judge the earth.

He will judge the world

With righteousness.

He will judge the people with equity.”

This psalm concludes with the judgment of Yahweh. The sea and everything in it, as well as the earth with everything in it would together roar about Yahweh. The floods and the mountains sing with joy at the presence of Yahweh, since he was coming to judge the world with righteousness and equity.

Everyone should join in worship to Yahweh (Ps 98:4-98:6)

“Make a joyful noise to Yahweh!

All the earth!

Break forth into joyous song!

Sing praises!

Sing praises to Yahweh

With the lyre!

Sing praises to Yahweh

With the sound of melody!

With trumpets

Make a joyful noise before the King!

The sound of the horn should

Make a joyful noise before the King!

Yahweh!”

All the earth should make a joyful noise to Yahweh. Everyone should sing melodic praises to Yahweh on the lyre. They should sound the trumpets and make a joyful noise before King Yahweh.

Sing about Yahweh’s victory (Ps 98:1-98:3)

A psalm

“O sing to Yahweh a new song!

For he has done marvelous things!

His right hand

Has gotten him victory.

His holy arm

Has gotten him victory.

Yahweh has made known his victory.

He has revealed his vindication

In the sight of the nations.

He has remembered his steadfast love.

He has remembered his faithfulness

To the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

The victory of our God.”

Psalm 98 has a non-descript title, a psalm, so that it is like Psalm 96. We are called to sing a new song to Yahweh because he has done marvelous things. His right hand and holy arm have provided victories for the Israelites. He has shown his victories, vindication of Israel before all nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen God’s victories.

Blessed be the powerful God (Ps 68:33-68:35)

“O rider in the heavens!

The ancient heavens!

Listen!

He sends out his voice.

He has a mighty voice.

Ascribe power to God.

His majesty is over Israel.

His power is in the skies.

Awesome is God in his sanctuary.

The God of Israel gives power.

He gives strength to his people.

Blessed be God!”

This long psalm ends with a rousing song to God as a rider in the ancient heavens. He sends out his voice so that we should listen to it. He has the power over Israel and all the skies. His sanctuary is awesome. The God of Israel gives power and strength to this people so that God is to be blessed.
