Future blessings (Ps 144:12-144:14)

“May our sons

In their youth

Be like plants full grown!

May our daughters

Be like corner pillars,

Cut for the building of a palace!

May our barns be filled

With produce of every kind!

May our sheep increase by thousands,

By ten thousands in our fields!

May our cattle be heavy with young!

May there be no breach in the walls!

May there be no exile!

May there be no cry of distress in our streets!”

David, or this psalmist, asks and prays for future blessings. He wanted their sons to be like full grown plants. He wanted their daughters to be corner stones or pillars of a palace. He wanted their barns full of every kind of produce. He wanted their sheep to increase. He wanted his cattle to be heavy with young calves. He wanted no breach in the wall, no exile, and no distress in the streets. These future blessings would lead to an idyllic time with no problems.

Victory song (Ps 144:9-144:11)

“I will sing a new song to you!

O God!

Upon a ten-stringed harp

I will play to you!

You give victory to kings.

Who rescue his servant David.

Rescue me from the cruel sword!

Deliver me from the hand of aliens!

Their mouths speak lies.

Their right hands are false.”

David was going to sing a new song to God on the 10 stringed harp. He was going to play because of the victory of the kings. God had rescued his servant David. I thought that this was David singing a new song. Instead, there is a reference to David, the servant of God, then a cry to rescue him, as if they were two different people. This psalmist wanted to be rescued from the cruel sword of aliens or strangers. Just like in the preceding verses, these aliens spoke lies and their right hands were false.

Asking for the power of Yahweh (Ps 144:5-144:8)

“Bow your heavens!

Yahweh!

Come down!

Touch the mountains

So that they smoke!

Make the lightning flash!

Scatter them!

Send out your arrows!

Rout them!

Stretch out your hand from on high!

Set me free!

Rescue me

From the mighty waters!

Rescue me

From the hand of aliens!

They speak lies.

Their right hands are false.”

David wanted Yahweh to bow down the heavens. He wanted Yahweh to come down to make the mountains smoke with a lightning flash. He wanted Yahweh to come down and rescue him from the mighty waters and the hands of aliens or strangers. These aliens, of course, speak lies with their false right hands.

Fragility of man (Ps 144:3-144:4)

“Yahweh!

What are human beings?

Why do you regard them?

Why do you think of mortals?

They are like a breath.

Their days are like a passing shadow.”

David wanted to know why Yahweh cared about humans or even thought about them. Humans are like a breath. They are like passing shadows, of little consequence.

Prayer before the battle (Ps 144:1-144:2)

A psalm of David

“Blessed be Yahweh!

My rock!

He trains my hands for war.

He trains my fingers for battle.

My rock!

My fortress!

My stronghold!

My deliverer!

My shield!

I take refuge in him.

He subdues the peoples under me.”

Psalm 144 is a psalm of David as he prepared for a battle in a war. Yahweh was to be blessed because he was the rock of David. He trained his hands and fingers for war and its battles. Yahweh was his fortress, his stronghold, his deliverer, his shield, and his refuge. Yahweh would subdue the various people for David.
