Yahweh keeps them from evil (Ps 121:7-121:8)

“Yahweh will keep you from all evil.

He will keep your life.

Yahweh will keep

Your going out.

Yahweh will keep

Your coming in.

Yahweh will do this

From this time on and forevermore.”

This psalm ends with Yahweh keeping these pilgrims of Israel from evil. He would protect their lives, whether they were coming in or going out. He would be their eternal protector from this time on.

Yahweh keeps them safe (Ps 121:5-121:6)

“Yahweh is your keeper.

Yahweh is your shade

At your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day.

The moon shall not strike you by night.”

Yahweh keeps them safe. He is their shade, protecting them during the day from the sun and at night from the moon.  Watch out for too much moon shine!

Yahweh does not sleep (Ps 121:3-121:4)

“Yahweh will not let your foot be moved.

He keeps you.

He will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel,

Will neither slumber nor sleep.”

Yahweh is vigilant. He will not let the Israelite feet be moved. He keeps them safe. He will not sleep nor will be slumber. The vigilant Yahweh will protect Israel and the Israelites.

The hills (Ps 121:1-121:2)

A song of ascents

“I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where will my help come?

My help comes from Yahweh,

Who made heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121 is another short psalm in this series of ascent songs or hymns on the way to Jerusalem. This psalmist looked to the hills. Where was his help going to come from? He simply replied that it would be Yahweh, who made heaven and earth, that would come to his aid. Do these hills refer to the Mount Zion or the hills where the Baals, the local gods in high places, were worshipped?
