Hymn to blessed Yahweh (Ps 103:19-103:22)

“Yahweh has established

His throne in the heavens.

His kingdom rules over all.

Bless Yahweh!

O you his angels!

You mighty ones who do his bidding!

You are obedient to his spoken word!

Bless Yahweh!

All his hosts!

His ministers that do his will!

Bless Yahweh!

All his works!

In all places of his dominion!

Bless Yahweh!

O my soul!”

This psalm ends with a rousing hymn of blessing to Yahweh. Yahweh is the king who rules over all from heaven. Thus all the angels who do his bidding and hear his word are to bless Yahweh. Everything that exists should bless Yahweh. David’s soul should bless Yahweh.

Yahweh’s steadfast love (Ps 103:15-103:18)

“As for mortals,

Their days are like grass.

They flourish like a flower of the field.

As the wind passes over it,

It is gone.

Its place knows it no more.

But the steadfast love of Yahweh

Is from everlasting to everlasting

Upon those who fear him.

His righteousness lasts

To their children’s children.

His righteousness lasts

To those who keep his covenant.

They must remember to do his commandments.”

Yahweh loves mortals, even though they are like grass and flowers. Mortals flourish like beautiful flowers of the field, but then when a wind passes over, they are gone. They are no more. However, the steadfast love of Yahweh is everlasting. To those who fear him, his righteousness will last to their children’s children, if they keep his covenant and do his commandments.

Yahweh’s mercy (Ps 103:6-103:14)

“Yahweh works vindication.

Yahweh works justice

For all who are oppressed.

He made known

His ways to Moses.

He made known

His acts to the people of Israel.

Yahweh is merciful.

Yahweh is gracious.

Yahweh is slow to anger.

Yahweh abounds in steadfast love.

He will not always accuse.

He will not keep his anger forever.

He does not deal with us

According to our sins.

He does not repay us

According to our iniquities.

As the heavens are high above the earth,

So great is his steadfast love

Toward those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west,

So far he removes our transgressions from us.

As a father has compassion

For his children,

So Yahweh has compassion

For those who fear him.

He knows how we were made.

He remembers that we are dust.”

David points out the mercy of Yahweh. Yahweh wants justice for the oppressed. He has shown his ways to Moses and Israel. He is merciful and gracious. He is slow to anger. He does not always accuse. He does not keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins and iniquities. His steadfast love is greater than the heavens above for those who fear him. He has removed our transgressions from the whole length of the earth. He is like a father who has compassion for his children. He knows that we were made from dust so that all that we have to do is fear him.

Blessed be Yahweh (Ps 103:1-103:5)

A psalm of David

“Bless Yahweh!

O my soul!

All that is within me,

Bless his holy name!

Bless Yahweh!

O my soul!

Do not forget all his benefits!

Who forgives all your iniquity?

Who heals all your diseases?

Who redeems your life from the Pit?

Who crowns you with steadfast love?

Who crowns you with mercy?

Who satisfies you with good

As long as you live?

Thus your youth is renewed like the eagles.”

Psalm 103 is simply a thanksgiving psalm of David. In the opening verses, he repeats the same phrases. Yahweh is to be blessed from his soul. Then David pointed out all the benefits of Yahweh with a series of questions. Yahweh forgives iniquities. He heals all diseases. He saves people from the pit or the grave. He crowns us with steadfast love, mercy, and goodness. He sustains our lives so that we remain young eagles.
