“If you show partiality,
You commit sin.
You are convicted
By the law
As transgressors.”
εἰ δὲ προσωπολημπτεῖτε, ἁμαρτίαν ἐργάζεσθε, ἐλεγχόμενοι ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου ὡς παραβάται.
James said, “If you show partiality (εἰ δὲ προσωπολημπτεῖτε), you commit sin (ἁμαρτίαν ἐργάζεσθε). You are convicted (ἐλεγχόμενοι) by the law (ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου) as transgressors (ὡς παραβάται).” This is the only time that this word appears in the NT writings, here in the Letter of James, προσωπολημπτεῖτε, that means to have respect of persons, favor specially, or show partiality. These judges should not show partiality or favor the rich over the poor. If they did that, they were sinning. The law or Torah would convict them as transgressors or breakers of the law. James remined these Jewish Christians of their Jewish roots in the Torah. Judges were not to show partiality to the rich over the poor. So too, they should do the same in the synagogue meetings. There should be no partiality towards rich wealthy people. Does your church favor wealthy people?
