Herod believed that John had reappeared as Jesus (Mk 6:16-6:16)

“But when Herod

Heard of it,

He said.

‘John,

Whom I beheaded,

Has been raised.’”

ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἔλεγεν Ὃν ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα Ἰωάνην, οὗτος ἠγέρθη.

There is nothing like this in Matthew, but in Luke, chapter 9:9, there was something similar, but Luke also said that Herod wanted to see Jesus.  King Herod had his own opinion.  He believed that Jesus was John resurrected.  Mark said that when Herod heard about this (ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἡρῴδης), he had no doubt.  He said (ἔλεγεν) that it was John, whom he beheaded, raised up in Jesus (Ὃν ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα Ἰωάνην, οὗτος ἠγέρθη).  Herod saw an equivalence between John the Baptist and Jesus.

Yahweh will be king (Ezek 20:33-20:33)

“As I live!

Says Yahweh God!

Surely with a mighty hand,

With an outstretched arm,

With wrath poured out,

I will be king

Over you!”

Yahweh left no doubt what his position was. Yahweh was the God who stretched out his mighty hand and arm. Anger would pour out of him. He was going to be king over them, no questions asked.

Yahweh is your God (Ezek 20:19-20:20)

“I,

Yahweh,

Am your God!

Follow my statutes!

Be careful

To observe my ordinances!

Hallow my Sabbath!

Thus it may be

A sign

Between me

And you.

Thus you may know

That I,

Yahweh,

Am your God!”

Here there is no doubt as Ezekiel has Yahweh begin and end with this phrase that he, Yahweh, is their God. Therefore they have to follow his statutes, his observances, and keep his Sabbath. The Sabbath has become the sign between Yahweh and his people.

The power of God (Jer 33:2-33:3)

“Thus says Yahweh.

Who made the earth.

Yahweh formed it

To establish it.

Yahweh is his name.

‘Call to me!

I will answer you!

I will tell you great things.

I will tell you hidden things

That you have not known.’”

Yahweh has made the earth, as he formed it and established it. There is no doubt that Yahweh was his name. Because Yahweh is so powerful, he wants them to call to him, since he was going to answer them. He would tell them great and hidden things that they did not know about.
