Joseph of Arimathea got the body of Jesus from Pilate (Jn 19:38-19:38)

“Pilate gave him permission.

Joseph came.

He removed the body

Of Jesus.”

καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν ὁ Πειλᾶτος. ἦλθεν οὖν καὶ ἦρεν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ.

John indicated that Pilate gave Joseph permission (καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν ὁ Πειλᾶτος).  Thus, Joseph came (ἦλθεν οὖν) and removed (καὶ ἦρεν) the body of Jesus (τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ).  Matthew, chapter 27:58, said that Pilate ordered or commanded that the body be given to Joseph (τότε ὁ Πειλᾶτος ἐκέλευσεν ἀποδοθῆναι).  Mark, chapter 15:45, said that when Pilate learned from the centurion (καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος) that Jesus was dead, he granted the body to Joseph (ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ).  Thus, the body of Jesus left the control of the Roman and the Jewish authorities.  However, there was no mention of the bodies of the other two robbers who had been crucified with Jesus.  Luke chapter 23:53, said that Joseph took the body down (καὶ καθελὼν) from the cross.  Notice that it was evening, since no burials were permitted on the Sabbath or feast days.  Many legends have developed around this wealthy Joseph from Arimathea, a town in Judea near Jerusalem.  Have you ever handled a dead body?
