Yahweh is king (Ps 47:1-47:4)

To the choirmaster leader, a psalm of the Korahites

“Clap your hands!

All you peoples!

Shout to God!

Shout with loud songs of joy!

Yahweh!

The Most High is awesome!

He is a great king over all the earth.

He subdued peoples under us.

He subdued nations under our feet.

He chose our heritage for us.

We are the pride of Jacob.

He loves us.”

Selah

Psalm 47 is another in the string of Korahite choral songs that proclaims Yahweh as king. They were to clap their hands and shout for joy because Yahweh was awesome. He was and is the king of the earth. He has subdued peoples and nations under the pride of Jacob, the Israelites. Yahweh has chosen Jacob and his descendants as his heritage because he loves them. This section ends with the musical interlude pause of the Selah.

God is truly the king (Ps 44:4-44:8)

“You are my king!

You are my God!

You commanded victories for Jacob.

Through you

We push down our foes.

Through your name

We tread down our assailants.

Not in my bow do I trust.

Nor can my sword save me.

But you have saved us from our foes.

You have put to confusion

Those who hate us.

In God

We have boasted continually.

We will give thanks to your name forever.”

Selah

God is their king since he commanded the victories of Jacob. Actually most of the time he reference was to Israel rather than Jacob. Because of God they were able to put down foes. Because of his name they were able to tread down their assailants. They had not trusted in their bows and arrows or swords. God has saved them from their foes. He forced those who hate God into confusion. They continue to boast in his name forever. However, here there is no indication of the name of Yahweh as it had been earlier.   This section ends with the Selah, a meditative musical pause.
