The prayer of Jeremiah (Jer 5:3-5:3)

“O Yahweh!

Do your eyes not look for truth?

You have struck them.

But they felt no anguish.

You have consumed them,

But they refused to take correction.

They have made their faces

Harder than a rock.

They have refused

To turn back,

To repent.”

Jeremiah offers this prayer to Yahweh. He knows that Yahweh seeks the truth. Even after being struck and punished by Yahweh, they still felt no anguish. They refused to take any corrections. Their faces have become harder than a rock. They have refused to turn and repent.

False pride (Isa 47:5-47:7)

“Sit in silence!

Go into darkness!

Daughter of the Chaldea!

You shall no more be called

The mistress of kingdoms.

I was angry with my people.

I profaned my heritage.

I gave them into your hand.

You showed them no mercy.

You make your yoke

Exceedingly heavy

On the aged.

You said.

‘I shall be mistress forever.’

You did not lay these things to heart.

You did not remember their end.”

Yahweh now tells the Chaldean Babylonians to go and sit in silent darkness. They no longer will be called mistress of kingdoms. Yahweh was mad at his own people, so he gave them over to the Babylonians. However, they have not shown any mercy to the Israelites. In fact, they made the work of the elderly harder and heavier. They thought that they would be the mistress of kingdoms forever. They failed to remember their end or to keep things in their own hearts.

The pleasant words (Prov 16:22-16:26)

“Wisdom is a fountain of life

To whoever has it.

But folly is the punishment of fools.

The mind of the wise

Makes their speech judicious.

The mind of the wise

Adds persuasiveness to their lips.

Pleasant words are like

A honeycomb.

Pleasant words are like

Sweetness to the soul.

Pleasant words are like

Health to the body.

Sometimes there is a way

That seems to be right.

But in the end

It is the way to death.

The appetite of workers works for them.

Their hunger urges them on.”

The fountain of life is wisdom. On the other hand, the punishment for fools is their own folly. The wise person will have judicious speech and persuasive lips. Their words are pleasant like a honeycomb. Theses pleasant words add sweetness to the soul and health to the body. You have to watch out for the way that seems like it is right, but actually is the way to death. If workers are hungry they will work harder.
