Great mystery (Eph. 5:32)

“This is a great mystery.

I am saying that it

To Christ

And the church.”

τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν, ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν.

Paul said, “This is a great mystery (τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν).  I am saying that (ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω) it refers to Christ (εἰς Χριστὸν) and the church (καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν).”  Paul indicated that marriage was a great mystery, since it refers to Christ and his church.  The word mystery has sometimes been translated as a sacrament.  The sacraments of the Church are great mysteries.  Thus, marriage is a sacrament.  Paul continued to use Christ and his church as the ideal mysterious relationship for humans to follow in marital relationships.  Do you believe that marriage is a mysterious sacrament?

Daniel discussed the situation with his companions (Dan 2:17-2:18)

“Then Daniel went

To his house.

He informed

His companions,

He told them

To seek mercy

From the God of heaven

Concerning this mystery.

With his companions

Might not perish

With the rest

Of the wise men

Of Babylon.”

Daniel went home and shared his information with his 3 other companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. He told them to ask mercy from the God of heaven. Once again it is not Yahweh, but the God of heaven. He wanted help with this great mystery. He hoped and prayed that they and the other wise men of Babylon would be able to spare their lives.
