The disciples were still worried about the lack of bread (Mt 16:7-16:7)

“They said to one another.

‘Is it because

We brought no bread?’”

οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες ὅτι Ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν.

This is exactly the same, word for word, as Mark, chapter 8:16.  The disciples were still worried that they had forgotten to bring any bread.  They did not understand the warning from Jesus.  They said to one another or reasoned (οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες) that Jesus must be talking about their failure to bring the bread (ὅτι Ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβομεν).

Pentecostals

There have many revivals of Christianity.  One of the latest 20th revivals was Pentecostalism that has a vitality in its worship.  Pentecostal Churches have loud and lively music, hand clapping, testimonials, speaking in tongues, and prayers in the Spirit.  There is an emphasis on the Holy Spirit that has often been forgotten in mainline churches.  The fastest growing Churches are precisely these charismatic Pentecostal churches.

Yahweh’s controversy (Mic 6:1-6:2)

“Hear what Yahweh says!

‘Rise!

Plead your case

Before the mountains!

Let the hills hear

Your voice.

Hear

The controversy of Yahweh!

You mountains!

You enduring foundations

Of the earth!

Yahweh has a controversy

With his people.

He will contend with Israel.”

Yahweh wanted them to rise up and plead their case.  He wanted them to do this before the mountains.  All the great communications between Yahweh and his people took place on the mountains or the hills, the closest that humans could get to heaven.  Yahweh then spoke directly to the mountains, called them ‘you’.  Yahweh had a controversy with his people, the Israelites.  This controversy was that they had forgotten how to walk with Yahweh.  They had forgotten the sayings and actions of their ancestors.  He was going to contend with them.

Against human fortresses (Hos 8:14-8:14)

“Israel has forgotten

His Maker.

They built palaces.

Judah has multiplied

Fortified cities.

But I will send

A fire

Upon his cities.

It shall devour

His strongholds.”

The final swipe in this chapter is against southern Judah also. Northern Israel had forgotten its creator maker. They had built palaces that they thought would survive. Meanwhile, southern Judah also built a number of fortified cities. Yahweh, via Hosea, reminded them that he could devour their cities and strongholds. They should have relied on Yahweh and not their own construction.

The people lack knowledge (Hos 4:6-4:6)

“My people

Are destroyed,

For lack of knowledge.

Because you have rejected

Knowledge,

I reject you

From being

A priest to me.

Since you have forgotten

The law of your God,

I also will forget

Your children.”

The main objection against the priests is that they have not educated the people of Israel. The people lack knowledge because the priests and prophets have rejected knowledge themselves. These same priests had forgotten the law of God. Therefore, Yahweh was going to forget their children.

Edom takes over Judah and Israel (Ezek 35:10-35:10)

“You said.

‘These two nations,

These two countries,

Shall be mine.

We will take possession

Of them.’

They had forgotten

That Yahweh was there.”

Mount Seir or Edom said that the two captured countries of Israel in the north and Judah in the south would now be part of Edom. They were going to take possession of these two countries after the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BCE. What they had forgotten was that Yahweh was in charge.

Jerusalem must suffer the consequences (Ezek 23:35-23:35)

“Therefore,

Thus says Yahweh God!

‘You have forgotten me.

You have cast me

Behind your back.

Therefore,

Bear the consequences

Of your lewdness!

Bear the consequences

Of your prostitution activities!’”

Yahweh told Ezekiel that Jerusalem had forgotten him. She had cast Yahweh behind her back. Thus, she had to suffer the consequences for her lewd prostitution actions.
