The call of Cyrus (Isa 46:10-46:11)

“Yahweh said.

‘My purpose shall stand.

I will finish my intention.’

I am calling a bird of prey

From the east.

I am calling the man

Of my purpose

From a far country.

I have spoken.

I will bring it to pass.

I have planned it.

I will do it.’”

Second Isaiah once again insists that Yahweh has called the bird of prey from the East in a far country, King Cyrus of Persia, for his own purpose. He was going to make sure that Cyrus could finish off his intentions and purposes. He has said this, and so it shall be. He has planned it, and so it will happen, no questions asked.

Isaiah confronts King Hezekiah (Isa 39:3-39:4)

“Then the prophet Isaiah

Came to King Hezekiah.

He said to him.

‘What did these men say?

From where did they come to you?’

King Hezekiah answered.

‘They have come to me

From a far country,

From Babylon.’

He said.

‘What have they seen in your house?’

King Hezekiah answered.

‘They have seen all

That is in my house.

There is nothing in my storehouses

That I did not show them.’”

Once again, this is almost word for word from 2 Kings, chapter 20. King Hezekiah had been very generous to these Babylonian envoys. He had showed them all the treasures of his realm, when they came to see him about his recovery from an illness. Isaiah wanted to know who these visitors were and where they came from. King Hezekiah explained that they were from the far country of Babylon. Then Isaiah wanted to know what they saw. King Hezekiah replied that he had showed them just about everything in his house.

Contentious woman (Prov 25:24-25:25)

“It is better to live in a corner of the housetop

Than in a house shared with a contentious wife.

Like cold water to a thirsty soul,

So is good news from a far country.”

This is exactly the same word for word as found in Proverbs, chapter 21. The anti-feminine motif of this work warns that is better to live in the corner of a housetop than share a house with a contentious woman. However, there is some refreshing good news from a far country that is like cold water to a thirsty soul.
