εἶπαν Κύριε, ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε δύο. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἱκανόν ἐστιν.
had a final unique saying of Jesus at this Last Supper meal that was not in the
other gospel stories. Only Luke indicated that the apostles said to
Jesus, the Lord (οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κύριε), that they had two swords (ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε
δύο). Finally, Jesus replied to them (ὁ
δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς) that this was enough (Ἱκανόν ἐστιν). The apostles seemed to misunderstand Jesus,
since that was common. They were going
to get a lot of swords to put up a battle.
They already had two swords. Have
you ever misunderstood anyone?
“But when he came
Of my father’s
Have bread enough
But here I am
Dying of hunger.’”
εἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν ἔφη Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου περισσεύονται ἄρτων, ἐγὼ δὲ λιμῷ ὧδε ἀπόλλυμαι.
This long parable story about the prodigal son can only be found in Luke, not in any of the other gospel stories. Luke indicated that Jesus said that when this prodigal son came to his senses or himself (εἰς ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἐλθὼν), he said that many of his father’s hired servants (ἔφη Πόσοι μίσθιοι τοῦ πατρός μου) had bread enough to spare or an abundance of bread (περισσεύονται ἄρτων). However, he was dying or perishing from hunger (ἐγὼ δὲ λιμῷ ὧδε ἀπόλλυμαι). This prodigal son realized that he had come from a privileged upbringing. Even the hired hands on his father’s and brother’s farm had more than enough bread to eat. He, on the other hand, was starving to death. Do you ever remember being very hungry?
“Which of you,
Does not first
You have to see
Whether you have enough
To complete it.”
Τίς γὰρ ἐξ ὑμῶν θέλων πύργον οἰκοδομῆσαι οὐχὶ πρῶτον καθίσας ψηφίζει τὴν δαπάνην, εἰ ἔχει εἰς ἀπαρτισμόν;
Luke uniquely has Jesus tell this story about intending or wishing to build a tower (Τίς γὰρ ἐξ ὑμῶν θέλων πύργον οἰκοδομῆσαι). Did they not first sit down (οὐχὶ πρῶτον καθίσας) and calculate the cost (ψηφίζει τὴν δαπάνην)? They would want to see if they had enough money to complete it (εἰ ἔχει εἰς ἀπαρτισμόν). Luke uniquely used the word ἀπαρτισμόν that means completion or perfection. This story about building a tower would assume a sophistication on the part of his audience. Very few people would have enough assets to build a tower. Do you calculate the cost of things before you start something?

καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Καθεύδετε τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε· ἀπέχει· ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα, ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν.
This is almost word for word in Matthew, chapter 26:45. In Luke, chapter 22, and John, chapter 22, there is nothing more about these sleeping disciples of Jesus. Mark recounted that Jesus came to his 3 disciples for a 3rd time (καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον). He spoke to them (καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς). He wanted to know why they were still sleeping and taking their rest (Καθεύδετε τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε)? Jesus told them that this was enough (ἀπέχει). He woke them up to tell them that the hour had come (ἦλθεν ἡ ὥρα) when the Son of Man was going to be betrayed or handed over (ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου) into the hands of sinners (εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν). The time for sleeping was over.

When they hear
They receive it
But they did not have

Only temporary ones.
On account of the word,
They fall away.”
καὶ οὗτοί εἰσιν ὁμοίως οἱ ἐπὶ τὰ πετρώδη σπειρόμενοι, οἳ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν τὸν λόγον εὐθὺς μετὰ χαρᾶς λαμβάνουσιν αὐτόν,
καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν ῥίζαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἀλλὰ πρόσκαιροί εἰσιν, εἶτα γενομένης θλίψεως ἢ διωγμοῦ διὰ τὸν λόγον εὐθὺς σκανδαλίζονται.
This explanation of the seeds sown on the rocky ground can be found in all 3 synoptic gospels, Matthew, chapter 13:20-21, and Luke, chapter 8:13, almost word for word to here. Mark said that Jesus explained that the seeds sown on the rocky ground (καὶ οὗτοί εἰσιν ὁμοίως οἱ ἐπὶ τὰ πετρώδη σπειρόμενοι) were like the people who heard the word (οἳ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν τὸν λόγον), and immediately received it with joy (εὐθὺς μετὰ χαρᾶς λαμβάνουσιν αὐτόν). Yet these seedlings did not have their own roots (καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν ῥίζαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς), but only temporary roots (ἀλλὰ πρόσκαιροί εἰσιν). When trouble, tribulation, or persecution arose (εἶτα γενομένης δὲ θλίψεως ἢ διωγμοῦ), because of the word (διὰ τὸν λόγον), they immediately stumbled and fell away (εὐθὺς σκανδαλίζεται). Once again, the seeds are the word. Listening to the word was not enough if it did not resonate or take root. Due to this rocky ground, the early excitement of receiving the word was not good enough to sustain a continual adherence to the word. There had to be good circumstances or pre-depositions to hearing and understanding for the word or the seed to be effective.

This is the explanation about the seeds on the path that can be found in all 3 synoptic gospels. Matthew, chapter 13:19, said that the birds were the evil one. Luke, chapter 8:12, mentions that the birds were the devil, not Satan. Mark indicated that Jesus explained that the seeds on the path or the road (οὗτοι δέ εἰσιν οἱ παρὰ τὴν ὁδὸν) were where the word was sown (ὅπου σπείρεται ὁ λόγος). They heard the word (καὶ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν), but immediately Satan came (ἔρχεται ὁ Σατανᾶς), in the form of the birds. Satan or the birds took away the sown seeds or the word that had been sown in them (καὶ αἴρει τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐσπαρμένον εἰς αὐτούς). Jesus said that these seeds were the holy words. The birds were the evil Satan that came and devoured them, because they did not understand the words within them. Listening to the word was not enough. There had to be good circumstances or pre-depositions to hearing and understanding for the word or the seeds to be effective.

ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι Μή ποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν· πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς.
This parable story is unique to Matthew. Jesus continued with this story. The wise bridesmaids replied (ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι λέγουσαι) that they would not give the foolish ones any oil with a flat “no (οὐ).” They said that there would not be enough oil for both groups of them (Μή ποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν). Instead, they suggested that they go to some oil dealers (πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας) to buy some oil for themselves (καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς). I am not sure what oil dealers would be open in the middle of the night. This seems like the wise ones gave a very self-righteous rude response.
