Endurance (Jas 1:4)

“Let endurance

Have its full effect.

Thus,

You may be mature

And complete,

Lacking in nothing.”

ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ ἔργον τέλειον ἐχέτω, ἵνα ἦτε τέλειοι καὶ ὁλόκληροι, ἐν μηδενὶ λειπόμενοι.

James said, “Let endurance (ἡ δὲ ὑπομονὴ) have (ἐχέτω) its full effect (ἔργον τέλειον).  Thus, you may be mature (ἵνα ἦτε τέλειοι) and complete (καὶ ὁλόκληροι), lacking (καὶ ὁλόκληροι) in nothing (ἐν μηδενὶ).”  James wanted his readers to have a complete endurance.  He wanted them mature, complete, and whole.  They were to lack nothing.  They were to be patient.  They should grow in life to a full maturity that included endurance during tough times.  How good is your endurance?

Endurance (Lk 21:19-21:19)

“By your patient endurance,

You will gain

Your lives.”

 

ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσεσθε τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν

 

Luke indicated that Jesus said that by their patient endurance (ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν), they would gain or acquire (κτήσεσθε) their lives (τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν).  There is something similar in Mark, chapter 13:13, and Matthew, chapter 10:22, and chapter 24:13.  Mark indicated that endurance was important.  Jesus said that the one who endured or stayed firm to the end would be saved (ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται).  Matthew had the same idea in chapter 10:22.  If they were able to be endure to the end (ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος), they would be saved, rescued, or healed (οὗτος σωθήσεται).  Jesus said that the one who endured or stayed firm to the end would be saved (ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται).  Luke did not use the word saved (σωθήσεται) but gained or acquired (κτήσεσθε) their lives.  Are you good at endurance?

Endurance (Mk 13:13-13:13)

“You will be hated

By all,

Because of my name.

But the one

Who endures

To the end

Will be saved.”

 

καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου· ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται.

 

There is something similar in Matthew, chapter 10:22, and in Luke, chapter 21:19, but in a more succinct way.  Mark indicated that endurance was important.  Jesus said that they would be hated (καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι) by all people (ὑπὸ πάντων) because of his name (διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου).  Then he said that the one who endured or stayed firm to the end would be saved (ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται).

Endurance (Mt 24:13-24:14)

“But the one who endures

To the end

Will be saved.

This gospel,

This good news

Of the kingdom

Will be preached

Throughout the whole world,

As a testimony

To all nations.

Then the end will come.”

 

ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται.

καὶ κηρυχθήσεται τοῦτο τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ εἰς μαρτύριον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, καὶ τότε ἥξει τὸ τέλος.

 

There is something similar in Mark, chapter 13:13, and in Luke, chapter 21:19, but in a more succinct way without any qualifiers.  Matthew had the same idea in chapter 10:22, since endurance was important.  Jesus said that the one who endured or stayed firm to the end would be saved (ὁ δὲ ὑπομείνας εἰς τέλος, οὗτος σωθήσεται).  This gospel, this good news, of the kingdom (τοῦτο τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας) would be preached (καὶ κηρυχθήσεται) throughout the whole inhabited world (ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ), as a witness to all the gentile nations (εἰς μαρτύριον πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν).  Then the end would come (καὶ τότε ἥξει τὸ τέλος).  Matthew seems to set a precondition before the coming of the end times that the gospel would be preached throughout the whole known world.
