Hope in Yahweh (Ps 131:3-131:3)

“O Israel!

Hope in Yahweh!

From this time on and forevermore.”

This very short psalm also ends with hope in Yahweh. The psalmist wanted Israel to hope in Yahweh forever.

Hope in Yahweh (Ps 130:7-130:8)

“O Israel!

Hope in Yahweh!

With Yahweh

There is steadfast love.

With him

There is great power to redeem.

He will redeem Israel

From all its iniquities.”

This short psalm ends with a sense of hope. The psalmist called on Israel to have hope in Yahweh and his steadfast love. Yahweh has the power to redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Hope in God (Ps 43:5-43:5)

“Why are you cast down?

O my soul!

Why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God!

I shall again praise him!

My help!

My God!”

This is an exact repeat of the refrain that ended Psalm 42. The psalmist accused his soul of upsetting him. He was going to hope in God. He would sing his praises again. God was his help. Thus despite some grievances, this northern psalmist still believed and praised God.

Hope in God (Ps 42:11-42:11)

“Why are you cast down?

O my soul!

Why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God!

I shall again praise him!

My help!

My God!”

Of course, we have a happy ending to this psalm. The psalmist accuses his soul of upsetting him. He was going to hope in God. He would sing his praises again. God was his help. Thus despite some grievances, this northern psalmist still believed and praised God.

Yahweh is our shield (Ps 33:20-33:22)

“Our soul waits for Yahweh.

He is our help.

He is our shield.

Our heart is glad in him,

Because we trust in his holy name.

Let your steadfast love!

Yahweh!

Be upon us!

Even as we hope in you.”

Now we are back to the first person plural possessive, “our.” Our heart and soul seeks Yahweh as a help, a shield, as someone our heart is glad over. We trust in his holy name. The conclusion of this psalm is a direct appeal to Yahweh. Let your love be upon us as we hope in you. Thus we conclude this beautiful Temple psalm to Yahweh the creator.
