Everyone is evil (Mic 7:3-7:4)

“Their hands are skilled

To do evil.

The official

Asks for a bribe.

The judge

Asks for a bribe.

The powerful

Dictate

What they desire.

Thus,

They pervert justice.

The best of them is

Like a brier.

The most upright

Of them is

Like a thorn hedge.

The day of their sentinels,

Of their punishment,

Has come.

Now their confusion

Is at hand.”

Micah thought that everyone was evil.  The officialsand judges did things only if they got bribes.  The powerful people did whatever they wanted to do, since they all perverted justice.  The best and most upright of them were like a briar patch or a thorn hedge.  The day of punishment was announced.  Thus, they were in a state of confusion.

The days of punishment have come (Hos 9:7-9:7)

“The days of punishment

Have come.

The days of recompense

Have come.

Israel cries.

‘The prophet is a fool!

The man of the spirit is mad!’

Because of your great iniquity,

Your hostility is great.”

Hosea declared that the day of punishment and compensation has come to Israel. Meanwhile, the Israelites cried out that the prophets were fools. They said that the spiritual men were mad. All of this great iniquity happened, because their hostility was so great.

The foolish idol makers (Jer 51:17-51:19)

“Everyone is stupid.

Everyone is

Without knowledge.

Goldsmiths

Are put to shame

By their idols.

Their images

Are false.

There is no breath

In them.

They are worthless,

A work of delusion.

At the time

Of their punishment,

They shall perish.

Not like these,

Is Yahweh,

The portion of Jacob.

He is the one

Who formed all things.

Israel is

The tribe

Of his inheritance.

Yahweh of hosts

Is his name.”

Once again, Yahweh, via Jeremiah, chides the foolish idol makers. These image makers are stupid without any knowledge. These goldsmiths are put to shame because their images are false, a worthless work of delusion without any breathe. They will all perish on the day of punishment. Yahweh, on the other hand, is not like these idols or idol makers. He is the portion of Jacob with his tribe of Israel as his inheritance. Yahweh of hosts is the name of the one who has formed all things.

The sacking of Babylon (Jer 50:26-50:27)

“Come against her

From every quarter!

Open her granaries!

Pile her up

Like heaps of grain!

Destroy her utterly!

Let nothing be left of her!

Kill all her bulls!

Let them go down

To the slaughter!

Woe to them!

Their day has come!

The time

Of their punishment!”

There was to be a complete destruction in Babylon. They were to come from every side. They were to open up the Babylonian granaries. Let them be piled up like heaps of grain. Nothing should be left of the Babylonians. They were to slaughter all the Babylonian bulls. The day of punishment would come upon the Babylonians.
