They are like stubble.
The fire consumes them.
They cannot deliver themselves
From the power of the flame.
This is no coal for warming oneself!
This is no fire to sit before!
Such to you are
Those with whom you have labored.
You have trafficked with them
From your youth.
They all wander about
In their own paths.
There is no one to save you.”
Babylon will become like stubble that a fire consumes. They cannot save themselves from the powerful flames that are not like a warming fire or a fire to sit around and talk. They have worked with these people from their youth. They wander all around. No one is there to save them. Babylon is doomed.
“Yahweh is king!
Let the earth rejoice!
Let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
Fire goes before him.
Fire consumes his adversaries on every side.
His lightning lights the world.
The earth sees it.
The earth trembles.
The mountains melt like wax
Before the Lord of all the earth.”
Psalm 97 is another untitled psalm about the kingship of Yahweh. Yahweh is the king who rules the earth. The earth and the coastlands rejoice and are glad. Clouds and darkness are all around Yahweh. Righteousness and justice are the foundations of this throne. Fire consumes all his adversaries. His lightning strikes the world. The earth sees it and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before Yahweh, the Lord of all the earth.
“You chastise mortals
In punishment for sin.
You consume like a moth
What is dear to him.
Surely everyone is a mere breath.”
God chastises mortals for their sins. In other words, what happens to you is deserved because you have sinned. God is like a moth that consumes anything that gets close to him. In reality, everyone is really like a mere breath of God, not more significant than that. This section ends with a musical pause, a Selah.
