Christ is the whole body (Eph. 4:16)

“Christ is

The whole body,

And knit together

By every ligament

With which it is equipped.

Each part

Is working properly

As it is supposed to work.

This promotes

The bodily growth

In building itself up

In love.”

Paul said, “Christ is the whole body (ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα), joined (συναρμολογούμενον) and knit together (καὶ συνβιβαζόμενον) by every joint or ligament (διὰ πάσης ἁφῆς) with which it is equipped (τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας).  Each part is working properly (κατ’ ἐνέργειαν) as it supposed to work (ἐν μέτρῳ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου μέρους).  This promotes the bodily growth (τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος ποιεῖται) in building itself up (εἰς οἰκοδομὴν ἑαυτοῦ) in love (ἐν ἀγάπῃ).”  Only this Ephesian letter used this unique word συναρμολογούμενον, that means to fit together or compact.  Only the Pauline letters used this word ἁφῆς, that means a joint, band, fastening, or ligament, and the word ἐπιχορηγίας, that means a supply, provision, equipment, or support, as well as the word ἐνέργειαν, that means working, action, productive work, or activity, and the word αὔξησιν, that means growth, or increase.  Paul explained in great detail the concept of the body of Christ as the new community or the new temple of worship.  Christ is the whole body that is joined together with the various ligaments or joints in the body.  Each part of the body has a distinctive role and must be working properly.  Each and every member of the Christian community is part of this body of Christ.  They each have to perform their task correctly for the whole body to operate.  If everything is going well, there will be natural growth.  Like a child growing and maturing, so too this local body of Christ will grow and mature with love (ἀγάπῃ).  Christian love is like the blood stream that goes everywhere in the body to make it go.  Do you try to build up your body?
