Christ descended and ascended (Eph. 4:9)

“When it says.

‘He ascended’,

What does it mean?

But that he had also descended

Into the lower regions

Of the earth.”

τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς;

Paul said, “When it says.  ‘He ascended (τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη)’, what does it mean?  But that he had also descended (εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη) into the lower regions (εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη) of the earth (τῆς γῆς)?”  Only this Ephesian letter used this word κατώτερα that means lower.  Paul once again cited Psalm 68:20, “Our God is a God of salvation!  To God!  To Yahweh!  Belongs the escape from death!”  This shout out says that Yahweh is a God of salvation who helps people escape from death.  Christ did precisely that.  Paul asked what did it mean that God ascended?  Of course, he answered it himself.  This meant that God via Christ had descended into the lower regions of the earth, either earth itself with his incarnation or the underworld after his death on the cross.  Thus, the faith statement about Jesus Christ descending into hell before he arose from the dead came about based on this Pauline statement.  Do you believe in hell?
