Luke said that Jesus became aware of their inner heart thoughts (ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἰδὼς τὸν διαλογισμὸν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν). He took a little child (ἐπιλαβόμενος παιδίον). He put this child by his side (ἔστησεν αὐτὸ παρ’ ἑαυτῷ). This talk about Jesus and the little child can also be found in Matthew, chapter 18:2, as well as Mark, chapters 9:36, with some changes. Mark said that Jesus took a little child. He then placed this little child in the middle or among his disciples. He held the child in his arms and then he spoke to his apostles. Matthew indicated that Jesus put an emphasis on becoming like little children to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus called or summoned a little child. He placed this little child in the middle of his disciples. Then he made a solemn proclamation that they had to change or convert to become like little children. Otherwise, they would never enter the kingdom of heaven Whoever became humble like this little child in their midst, would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. The greatest in heaven would be the simple humble little children or those who acted like children, without power and depending on other people. What do you think the role of children should be?

καὶ μετὰ μικρὸν πάλιν οἱ παρεστῶτες ἔλεγον τῷ Πέτρῳ Ἀληθῶς ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ· καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖος εἶ.
This is similar to Matthew, chapter 26:73, Luke, chapter 22:59, and John, chapter 18:26, with some changes. Peter was confronted a 3rd time. John said that a man recognized, Peter, because he was a relative of the one whose ear Peter had cut off. Matthew said that after a little while some of the bystanders approached Peter. Luke said that it was about an hour later when another person came up to Peter. Mark, like Matthew, said that that after a little while (καὶ μετὰ μικρὸν), some bystanders again said to Peter (ἔλεγον τῷ Πέτρῳ) that he certainly was one of those followers of Jesus (Ἀληθῶς ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ), because he was from Galilee (καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖος εἶ), a Galilean. Matthew added that Peter’s accent in his speech betrayed him as a man from Galilee. For a 3td time, Peter was accused of being a man from Galilee, a follower of Jesus of Nazareth. You can never escape your accent.
Until 1966, Catholics had been anti-modernism and had been skeptical of modern rationality. The Catholic Church had a rigorous clear-cut world view. With the changes of Vatican II (1962-1966) some feel that the Church has abandoned unchanging truths. There was a reaction to the English liturgy, the changes in the church, and the attacks on the absolute authority of the Pope. The sinfulness of man needed the episcopal authority to direct them. God is a God of judgment, not a God of mercy. Catholic fundamentalists are selective, with not much about the Trinity, but lots about the Latin Mass, female and married priests, and artificial birth control.

A wife’s wickedness

Her wickedness darkens her face
Like that of a bear.
Her husband sits
Among the neighbors.

Sirach continues his diatribe against women, particularly evil wives. He would rather live with a lion or a dragon, rather than an evil wife. In fact, he insists that her appearance changes because of her wickedness since her face will become dark like that of a bear. That would be some sight. Her poor husband will have to sit and eat with his neighbors and sigh bitterly. The worse kind of iniquity or evil is that committed by your wife. She should be reckoned as a sinner. This evil wife talks too much for her quiet husband. Thus he is like an old man trying to climb up a sandy dune. Sirach wants you to have pity for this poor husband with the evil wife, as if it never happened the other way around. Or perhaps he had some personal experience that colored his attitude.
“All things are wearisome.
More than one can express.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing.
The ear is not filled with hearing.
What has been
Is what will be.
What has been done
Is what will be done.
There is nothing new under the sun.
Is there a thing of which it is said?
This is new.’
It has already been
In the ages before us.
People of long ago
Are not remembered.
There will be no remembrance
Of people yet to come
By those who come after them.”
Qoheleth was weary of everything. His eyes and his ears were weary, always looking and listening for more. However, the past is a predictor of the future. Whatever was done in the past will happen again in the future. Then there is the famous saying that there is nothing new under the sun. Perhaps in human relations not much changes. However, Qoheleth did not live in the technological 21st century, where things like airplanes, automobiles, radio communications, TV, computers, and I-phones would have surprised him as new things. It is true that human behavior is repetitive. We do tend to forget about the people in the past, just as the people in the future will forget about us.
To the choirmaster leader, a psalm of the Korahites, according to Alamoth, a song
“God is our refuge.
God is our strength.
He is a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear!
Even though the earth should change.
Even though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea.
Even though its waters roar and foam.
Even though the mountains tremble with its tumult.”
Psalm 46 is another of the psalms or songs of the sons of Korah. However, this is a victory song that inspired Martin Luther to write his famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress.” In fact, it is a hymn of Mount Zion that was to be sung by an Alamoth, who was a soprano or female voice. God was their refuge and strength. He was present during any time of trouble. Therefore they would not fear. Even though great changes on the earth were taking place, they would not be afraid. There was a mention of the underwater earthquakes, tsunamis, or above ground earthquakes, when God would be there. At this thought there is a musical interlude or pause, a Selah.
