Beautiful feet (Rom 10:15)

“How are they

To proclaim him

Unless they were sent?

As it is written.

‘How beautiful

Are the feet

Of those who bring good news!’”

πῶς δὲ κηρύξωσιν ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν; καθάπερ γέγραπται Ὡς ὡραῖοι οἱ πόδες τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων ἀγαθά.

Paul questioned how they would be able to proclaim Jesus (πῶς δὲ κηρύξωσιν), unless they were sent (ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν)?  As it is written (καθάπερ γέγραπται).  “How beautiful (Ὡς ὡραῖοι) are the feet (οἱ πόδες) of those who bring good news (τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων ἀγαθά)!”  This is a quotation from Deutero Isaiah, chapter 52:7, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger.  He announces peace.  He brings good news.  He announces salvation.  He says to Zion.  ‘Your God reigns.’”  This Second-Isaiah messenger had beautiful feet going over the mountains to bring good news.  This messenger brought good news, as he announced peace and salvation.  He reminded the people of Mount Zion that their God was in control and ruled over them.  The good news of Isaiah was the end of the Babylonian captivity and the restoration of their country.  Paul, of course, used this talk about beautiful feet for those who would bring the good news of Jesus.  Do you have beautiful feet?

Good news (Isa 52:7-52:7)

“How beautiful upon the mountains

Are the feet of the messenger.

He announces peace.

He brings good news.

He announces salvation.

He says to Zion.

‘Your God reigns.’”

Second Isaiah has a messenger with beautiful feet go over the mountains to bring good news. This messenger brings good news as he announces peace and salvation. He reminds the people of Mount Zion that their God is in control and rules over them. There is no attempt to talk about a human king for Israel.
