“Happy are those
Who do not blunder with their lips.
They need not suffer remorse for sin.
Happy are those
Whose hearts do not condemn them.
They have not given up their hope.”
Happiness comes to those who do not sin with their lips. Then they have no need to have remorse for their sins. Happiness comes to those who have a good heart that does not condemn them. They have not given up hope. This seems like a simple formula for happiness. Do not sin.
“I know that there is nothing better
Than to be happy.
They enjoy themselves
As long as they live.
It is God’s gift
That all should eat and drink.
They should take pleasure
In all their toil.”
Humans should be happy as long as they live. This gift from God is the ability to eat and drink. Notice that the name ‘God’ is used and not ‘Yahweh’ or ‘Lord.’ Humans should also take pleasure from their work.
“Happy are the people
To whom such blessings fall!
Happy are the people
Whose God is Yahweh!”
This psalm ends with an optimistic shout out for the happy people. These are the people who are blessed. They are happy because Yahweh is their God.
