“When this period was over,
Lifted up my eyes
My reason returned
The Most High.
I praised him.
I honored the one
Who lives forever.
His sovereignty is
An everlasting sovereignty.
His kingdom endures
From generation to generation.
All the inhabitants
Of the earth
What he wills
With the host
As well as among the inhabitants
Of the earth.
There is no one
Who can stay his hand.
No one can say to him.
‘What are you doing?’”
After all this humiliation and his unreasonable activity, King Nebuchadnezzar lifted up his eyes to heaven. He blessed and praised the Most High God. He honored the eternal God who ruled the whole world, whose dominion and power would last forever, because his kingdom would endure for all generations. All humans were as nothing in his eyes. He does whatever he wants to do with the heavenly beings as well as the human beings. There was no one on earth who could question what he was doing. The king has basically converted to the God of Israel in this first-person singular account.
“Bless the Lord!
He has crowned you
May the Lord
Grant you wisdom
May you judge his people
Thus their prosperity
May not vanish.
Thus their glory
Throughout all their generations.”
Sirach has this blessing at the end of this long section on Aaron and the Levitical priests. You should bless the Lord because he has crowned you with glory. Then the Lord may grant you wisdom to judge with justice. Thus your prosperity may have a glorious future throughout all generations to come.
“Yahweh brings the counsel of the nations to nothing.
He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
The counsel of Yahweh stands forever.
The thoughts of his heart go to all generations.
Happy is the nation whose God is Yahweh!
Happy are the people
That he has chosen as his heritage!
Yahweh looks down from heaven.
He sees all humankind.
From where he sits enthroned,
He watches all the inhabitants of the earth.
He fashions the hearts of them all.
He observes all their deeds.
A king is not saved by his great army.
A warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
The war horse is a vain hope for victory.
By its great might it cannot save anyone.”
Yahweh controls everything. The various nations cannot counsel together without his approval. He frustrates the plans of men. His counsel stands forever and for all generations. Luckily the nation that has Yahweh as its God will be happy and blessed. Yahweh has chosen them as his heritage. Yahweh sees all things from heaven where he sits on his throne looking at all the inhabitants of the earth. He knows their hearts and watches all their deeds. A king, a warrior, or a great war horse does not gain victory without him. Yahweh is the one in charge of everything.
