“Adulterers!
Do you not know
That friendship
With the world
Is enmity
With God?
Whoever wishes
To be a friend
Of the world
Becomes
An enemy
Of God.”
James said, “Adulterers (μοιχαλίδες)! Do you not know (οὐκ οἴδατε) that friendship (ὅτι ἡ φιλία) with the world (τοῦ κόσμου) is (ἐστιν) enmity (ἔχθρα) with God (τοῦ Θεοῦ)? Whoever wishes (ὃς ἐὰν οὖν βουληθῇ) to be a friend (φίλος εἶναι) of the world (τοῦ κόσμου) becomes (καθίσταται) an enemy (ἐχθρὸς) of God (τοῦ Θεοῦ).” James made this a clear choice. You either were friends with the world or friends with God. He called his readers “adulterers” not “brothers”. In Jewish history, those who worshipped other gods were adulterers. They were turning away from the one true God, Yahweh. If they were friendly with the world, placing material things at a higher level, then they became an enemy to God. They could not worship and covet material earthly wealth and still love God. They had to be a friend of God or his enemy with an obsession about material goods. Are you a friend or enemy of God?
