Husbands (chapter 5)

Paul explained the role of husbands.  They were to love their wives as Christ loves his church.  Christ gave himself up for the church to sanctify it by washing with the word.  Thus, the church is without spot or wrinkle, holy without a blemish.  Husbands should love their wives as their own body.  Whoever love his wife, loves himself.  Nobody hates his own body.  Husbands should nourish and care for their wives, because we are all members of Christ’s body.

Wives (chapter 5)

Paul said that all the Christians should be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Thus, wives should be subject to their husbands.  The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church.  Christ is the savior and the body of the church. so that the church is subject to Christ.  Thus, wives are subject in everything to their husbands.

Be wise (chapter 5)

Paul said that they should be careful about how they live.  They should be wise, making the most of their time.  They were not to be foolish.  They should understand the will of God.  They should not get drunk with wine, but be filled with the Holy Spirit.  They should sing psalms and hymns, giving thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ.

The children of the light (chapter 5)

Paul said that the new gentile Christians were children of the light.  The fruits of this light are good, right, and true.  They should please the Lord.  They should expose the unfruitful works of darkness, but not be involved in them.  These children of disobedience and darkness do shameful secret things.  The new gentile Christians should expose these dark things by exposing them to the light, since Christ is their light.

Renounce pagan ways (chapter 5)

Paul said that he did not want to hear about any immorality or impurity among the new holy followers of Jesus Christ.  He did not want to hear about silliness, filthiness, nor levity, but only words of thanksgiving.  Otherwise, they would not have any inheritance in the kingdom of God.  They should not be deceived with empty words.  They were not to associate with the sons of disobedience, who lived in darkness.

Rules for the new life (chapter 4)

Paul said that they should put away falsehood, instead speak the truth.  They should not let the sun go down on their anger.  There should be no room for the devil.  Thieves should stop stealing and do honest work.  There should be no evil talk, but only grace filled words.  They were not to grieve the Holy Spirit who had sealed them.  There should not be any bitterness, wrath, anger, slander or malice among them.  On the other hand, they should be kind, tenderhearted and forgiving.
