“If anyone
Takes away
From the words
Of the book
Of this prophecy,
God will take away
That person’s share
In the tree of life
And in the holy city,
Which are described
In this book.”
John said, “If anyone takes away (καὶ ἐάν τις ἀφέλῃ) from the words (ἀπὸ τῶν λόγων) of the book (τοῦ βιβλίου) of this prophecy (τῆς προφητείας ταύτης), God (ὁ Θεὸς) will take away (ἀφελεῖ) that person’s share (τὸ μέρος αὐτοῦ) in the tree of life (ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου τῆς ζωῆς) and in the holy city (καὶ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως τῆς ἁγίας), which are described (τῶν γεγραμμένων) in this book (ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τούτῳ).” John then added the reverse of the preceding statement. Not only should they not add words to this book, but they should not take any words away from this book. This was like a reminder to Moses in Deuteronomy, chapter 4:2. God said to Moses, “You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it.” The consequences for taking words away was the inability to partake in the tree of life with its twelve fruits and the holy city itself, which were both described in this book. If you took things away, you would be cast out of the holy eternal city and all its good things. Would you like to take away some restrictions that are in the holy bible?
