The smoke from the bottomless pit (Rom 9:2)

“He opened

The bottomless pit.

From the pit

Rose smoke,

Like the smoke

Of a great furnace.

The sun

And the air

Were darkened

With the smoke

From the pit.”

John said, “He opened (καὶ ἤνοιξεν) the bottomless pit (τὸ φρέαρ τῆς ἀβύσσου).  From the pit (ἐκ τοῦ φρέατος) rose (καὶ ἀνέβη) smoke (καπνὸς), like the smoke (ὡς καπνὸς) of a great furnace (καμίνου μεγάλης).  The sun (ὁ ἥλιος) and the air (καὶ ὁ ἀὴρ) were darkened (καὶ ἐσκοτώθη) with the smoke (ἐκ τοῦ καπνοῦ) from the pit (τοῦ φρέατος).”  John said that either the angel or the fallen star opened the bottomless pit, the source of evil.  Thus, smoke, like the smoke of a great furnace, rose up from the pit, so that the smoke from the pit caused the sun and the air to turn dark.  Have you ever been in a smoky place?
